I have a real CDL only due to my employment for an RV dealer, however, no special licensing is required for any RV in AZ.
My question is why this special licensing is being called a Non-Commercial Commercial Driver's License (CDL). It's very confusing. The RV license, as it should be called, has nothing to do with a real CDL.
BTW I've seen people drive off in 45' diesel pushers with zero prior Class A experience other than the test drive.

In Texas it's required if you have combination vehicle over 26,000 lb, but if you're not using it to commercially drive (getting paid for driving a load) in an RV it's called a CDK exempt, but you still have to have the class A licence (CDL exempt).
I know from friends being pulled over that the CA Highway Patrol will pull over triple axle toy haulers to check for the non-commercial Class A, which is required of CA drivers for trailers over 15,000. Out-of-state drivers need not worry.
Frankly I'm glad states are starting to test RV drivers, as minimal as the testing is. I just wish they'd test the diesel owners for airbrake knowledge. One owner I read thought he'd lose his diesel brakes if the air bled out. Folks need to be educated.

Does it seem like someone that writes for RV Geeks reads this forum? Their latest issue (out today) covers an article “do you need a special class A license to drive an RV”
It has happened more than once that a discussion here has brought on or triggered an article.

Ah, the fun of having a CDL, had to go for my physical last Friday. Eye test, hearing test, Blood pressure test, limb mobility test, balance test, hernia check. Oh the fun every two years.
