Mounting a TV in a 3010BHDS Aspen Trail
Hey Everyone,
Just bought our Aspen Trail 3010BHDS last week and I need to install some TV mounts. Naturally I know I can use the long ones provided with the kit but I was curious what size I need to use to mount the TV in the living area, the bunkhouse and the master bedroom? I have heard too many horror stories about going through walls and I don't want it to happen to me.
Thanks!

Ordinarily, there is supposed to be a backer board where you would want to mount a tv. Unfortunately, sometimes they don't install them. In one of the topics here on the forum, they mentioned a quality stud finder was supposed to be able to locate a good spot for the mount. mine was marked with a specific location but unfortunately, there was not a backer there BUT, the wallboard is NOT strong enough for supporting a TV. AARON may have some other info.

I would not use a lag bolt over 3/4" long. Need to verify that there is actually a backer in the wall. You have wood wall framing, it may be 2"'x2" or it could be 1"'x2". If you can't find the backer board you can mount a piece of plywood to the wall across two studs to give you something solid to mount the brackets to.

Thanks
Thanks,
And I just spoke to the dealership where I bought it and they said the backer board is usually 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" thick so 1 inch should work fine. Will probably still lean to the cautious side and do as Aaron said and go 3/4". And probably also determine if the backer board is there and do a test whole before drilling too many holes.
Thank you again

Wow, that's certainly way thicker than my indoor and outdoor mounts were. They used flimsy 1x3's, I took the wall covering off and doubled all of the boards. I wouldn't bet money on what the dealer said.

The backer board is supposed to be that thick? Doesn't the backer board mount to the studs? That makes the 'dealer said' backer board thicker than the studs.
That doesn't sound right.

3/4" as mentioned before should work. You've decided to drill some exploratory holes so you should be fine.
These TVs will go where exactly? Also, what size are they?

Unless something has changed drastically the dealer is dead wrong. They put a piece of 5/8" plywood about 6"-8" wide between the two studs and staple it in place. The wall studs are typically 1"x3" aka 3/4"x2.5".

Nothing really heavy then. Drill your exploratory holes to see if the backers are actually there and then use the 3/4" lags. The 24 incher probably could be hung with 1/2" lags without any problem.

I didn't like lag bolts (too easy to loosen for me, all those bumps in the road) so I looked on the back side of the wall and determined that I could drill all the way through and use washer headed bolts from the far side back to the TV mount and use washers and nuts on the TV side. Lots stronger for me. I sleep well.

For what its worth...
What I did was cut a 3/4 piece of plywood a little bigger than the mounting bracket. Mount the plywood to the wall with good strong anchor bolts, short enough that I would not go through the out side skin. Then just mounted the TV bracket onto the plywood. I did paint it black so it was let noticeable. Small TV 24" not too heavy.
