Fender destroyed

On I-40 in Memphis yesterday I noticed a pile of wood that apparently fell out of someones truck, or vehicle. You guessed it.... couldn't avoid it completely traffic too heavey did manage to swerve a bit to keep from hitting the whole pile. Well, driver side trailer tire hit one board flipped it up against the fender bending it up bouncing off and hitting a commercial van in the grill area.

Weird thing was afterwards I saw in the sideview mirror others running over it wood flying everywhere! And no one stopped...the commercial van passed me like nothing happened and the others kept rollin... they were like zombies like who cares!!

I pulled the fender off today will get another one. I see where it's cut to fit and not original size. Looks like its a 68"x20"x1". Im guessing on the size. I can only find two sizes 72" and the 68" , It did put a ding in the j wrap too, but not enough to justify replacement. I do wish people would tie their crap down when hauling it. As for Memphis drivers, are you really zombies??

Sorry to hear that. Unsecured loads and shoddy trailers, both a very frequent occurrence here in Texas, are my two biggest pet peeves on the road. If only cops devoted a fraction of the time they spend on speeding tickets to these, we would drive on much safe roads.

A couple of questions..
1) where did you get the tin (j wrap) or did you fabricate?
2) do you remember the size of the fender?
3) how is the panel attatched to slide?

I dont want to order from factory if I dont need to. I'm sure it would be triple the cost once dealer adds his cost..

From pictures looks like you did a good job!

Thanks

I priced the tin from the factory. 12 foot is the only length I could get, I only needed two feet. The panel was only 80 bucks which wasn't too bad but the shipping was a 125 bucks because of truck freight.

I usually ask whenever I'm in a dealership or repair shop if they might have a length laying around. So far I'm still bent.

1) I had a local sheet metal shop bend it for me. They also powder coated it for me.

2)I got the fender & decals from my local Dutchman dealer (CW).

3) Panel slid up into a s-drive and screws into some aluminum framing.

Hope this helps.

I know that's right Robert! Motorcycles and debris in the road is not a good thing especially in the situation I was in..... no where to go .

Eightydo, thanks for the response yes that helps. I was just wondering how the tin was attached under that molding strip. I guess I remove the screws on the cheap aluminum frame underneath and it just slides down.

Sounds less expensive to find the tin locally and have it bent rather than having it shipped.

You'll probably want to remove the trim molding and a portion of the screws that hold the rail on, especially above the damaged part. The tin and glass butt each other under the rail and there may be some type of weather seal between them.

Make sure you check up under the fender that there was no damage done to the wheel well area. When my tire blew besides the fender damage I also had floor damage. $5,000 was total bill.

Man that stinks. When you say floor damage... do you mean they had to put a new floor in the slide? Hard to tell for me if that is the right or left side of trailer or If it's even a Voltage? Picture dated 2010. I have no damage other than the fender and a ding in the tin. I was lucky this time. I'm guessing you had china bombs when your blowout occured... or was it something else?

Not sure how that trim piece is attached. If I'll bet its held on with the sealer. Probably have to cut through sealer and its sitting on a lip, once removed the tin is probably screwed into place?? Like I said I don't need to repalce tin but would like to know in advance how to get it off without tearing up other pieces, such as the trim.

The rail holds the plastic trim in place. The trim just sits in the rail and the rail is held on by screws. The trim is sort of caulked to the rail. Pinch the trim and pull it out enough to expose the screws in the rail.

The tin, which on mine is .030 aluminum. It butts the glass and both seams are covered by the rail and trim system. Without a photo I can only say the aluminum is bent at 90 degrees and is screwed to the chasis.

Dutchman/Keystone, please stop getting check post #3 in this thread and you can see the rail and trim and screws.

No it was on my Teton a USA Goodyear 14 ply 16" ( lost everyone ). Twice I lost two on the same side within 10 miles of each other. Damage to floor was on the kitchen floor. Remember your slides ride on top of the main floor when in.
That is why I went to 17.5's and problem went away.

Trim Moldings

Look towards the bottom of the page and see if this matches what you have.

Maybe here too http://www.factoryrvsurplus.com/cate...ategory_id=172

The only thing I'd suggest is to pull the trim off and see what's under there. It has to come off anyway probably. Looks like it bruised in a few places.

1) There are screws on the bottom end caps that hold tin.
2) Cut RTV(silicone) with blade both Face and Underside of slide.
3) There are three or four screws on the bottom of tin to remove.
