Oil and Transmission Temperatures
I have a 2015 F-350 diesel dually. While towing, what would do you think would be the optimum safe operating temperature on the oil and transmission temperatures. Never had a truck before, let alone a diesel and never towed more than a 5,000 pound boat behind a car. Thanks,

My Temps don't change much from driving empty until it gets into the upper 90's, then they warm up a bit. Pulling the trailer, they just get there faster. My coolant Temps run 195 to 198 just driving, and in the summer on the flats with the usual Oklahoma headwind, it will run up to 204 or so. Climbing the mountains will spike it for a bit, then the fan will engage and cool it back down. Transmission Temps do about the same. Rear differential does run a little warmer, as would be expected. For the record, I do tend to be real easy on it with the trailer. I run 65mph on the flats, and slow down going up the hills.

I have an Edge Insight CTS, a great tool for monitoring a lot of stuff. My temps run 205ish in the mountains, for both coolant and transmission. It has gotten higher, but I just slow down and the temps come back down.

Not to hijack your thread, but if you've never had a diesel truck before let me suggest that you watch the EGT (exhaust gas temperature) as well...very critical to keeping a happy, healthy turbo...

Rusty - if you don't have an OEM one, it is an excellent investment for anyone who does any heavier towing as we do.

I have been using an app on a phone for my AUX. guages called Torque Pro. You have to install an OBDII Bluetooth adapter in your truck to make it work, but it provides realtime display of any sensor that the truck power train system has. I just picked up an outdated phone with Bluetooth that a friend of mine didn't use anymore, and wired a micro-USB charger to it. Mounted it on the dash, and it server as a display for coolant temp, turbo boost, EGT, voltage, DPF temp (so I can tell when it is in a regen cycle) and MPG. It can read any sensor output from the ECM computer. It will also read fault codes, and reset them. It has been a cheap way to get the extra displays that I want, without spending hundreds for a tuning computer. The adapter cost me $70 and the app is $12 or $14. Some of you might want to check it out.

we just came back from the Smokey Mountains with our 2009 f350 diesel with tuner etc...Truck in tow mode, and keep eye on ALL temps!!! My stock gauges ALL read normal while my tuner was approaching 215 on my coolant while following a semi up a long pull... I found between 50-55 mph with clean air in front was my rigs happy place keeping the temps down while pulling up the mountains... Having said this, every truck, person, and mountain are different. Don't be too proud to pull over if you have to let the truck cool down!!!

Rusty,
If you haven't checked yet, the EGT's are not available for display on a Ford 6.7 displays.
There are many apps availble for both android and Iphones that you can purchase an OBDII plug in adapter and monitor all kinds of stuff. I use my Iphone with a wifi OBD adapter and 2 apps called Engine link and Forscan lite (still trying to decide which app I like best). total cost ~$30 for adapter and App (one app is free, other one $10)

My 3895 loaded and my 3500HD Dually Crew Cab is about the same weight with the toys, I go on Hwy 395 from southern Nevada to Northern Nevada all the time….One of the mountains I go up is about 13K feet high from 0 high and around 5miles long…..Thats about the hardest I go up and the temp has gone up to 215 and with Trans going to 200 at 50mph….I am adding a larger Trans Pan to keep it cooler with more ATF…I have also changed my Front disc with holes to keep it also cooler...

Seems like every time I check the gauge mode on my stock F-250 I see trans 190 & oil 208 -(uphill and down). I have started to not to worry about it. I change my oil at 5,000 miles and the trans when the dealer tells me.

eighttydo, Sorry haven't been over that way, When I go the south, I go 395 to Barstow, then anywhere south….LA, ARZ, TEX etc. If I go North, I go 395 North, or 80 East…The hill just North of Mono Lake is the only one I have come across, that is a real Bear, and I have been from Canada North to San Diego South…East to Yellowstone Park, and New Orleans to the South and haven't come across any hill longer, and higher…..Even Hwy 5 in Calif. wasn't as bad….
