Extending Load Wires

I have two lead acid batteries and solar connections through an on board controller and a 1200 watt inverter. For some reason, the factory install of the batteries has both the red and black load wires going to the first battery. The second battery is hooked correctly in parallel and has the ground to the frame. Second battery also has a couple other smaller wire connections to positive and negative sides. The black load wire is too short to reach the second battery. The red load wire is reachable and I could buy a longer wire to connect it to the second battery. In the end just trying to create better balance to the battery usage. Any others make this change

Yes, you should have the positive on one battery and the negative on the other. Assuming these are 2 12 volt batteries.
You want the load to go through both batteries. The charge as well, so get some larger wire and do the deed!

battery wires are inexpensive and easy to get. Longer sometimes is better since it's a real pain to get under there and do anything. Go for it, change 'em all while you there.
