Good question! I just made a system to tie my awnings down using soft strap ties and 800 pound para cord. The soft tie goes around the awning arm and para cord loops up from a stake with a loop then back down. I also have a three foot pice of para cord that hangs from the soft tie. So it the wind comes up hard and unspectedly I just release the para cord from the stake, pull it throught the soft tie, grab the three foot piece to remove the soft tie and the awning is ready to retract. It take less than minute to do it.
So, is it good idea to tie the awning down? I doubt it!
If it is really windy I think things will get messed up.
I had my awning out today and the wind got up to about. 15 mph. It was flapping enough for me to think about retractng it then the wind calmed and stopped . I did not have my tie down system on.
Although I thougt I came up with brilliant idea I am giving it second thoughts.
