Relocate License Plate
I am looking to relocate the license plate from hanging below the unit (stupid place IMHO) up onto the ramp. Has anyone done this yet or am I going to pioneer this mod? Looking for pics, pro's, con's and/or mistakes to avoid.
Thanks!
Don

My winter project was to look a a spring loaded one. Mounted in the same spot but up and not hanging. Folds down for the ramp

Hmmm - got to assume that saying "was" meaning it is also next winter's project? LOL - I have more than a few of those!

Haha. I have a few. In yr two with our first hauler we've learned what we want, where we want it. I would not mount stuff just to move it later. A flip plate holder is on that list. The fun is about to begin

don,
After I busted my license plate holder and lost my plate going over some railroad tracks in my old toy hauler, I tried an idea I found on eTrailer to create a flexible license plate holder out of an old piece of rubber mat.
It worked well and I remounted the plate on my Voltage the same way. With the mat the plate will flex 180 degrees so it doesn't matter that it hangs below the frame.

As long as it has a light on it anywhere back there will work. Seems like a license plate without a working light on it is a good probable cause for the coppers.

HornedToad - I will keep that idea in mind - I am still leaning toward moving it up on the ramp, but this is a great solution as well. And yes sundancer, the light is a requirement.

Don't like having plate below trailer door. Subject to getting mangled. All of the new plates are reflective so having illumination in my mind not necessary

While I agree that it may not seem necessary, it is a requirement so I will move the lighting up as well - I think it will be simple to do and easy to "hide" as my rig is black and I can run the wires inside wire loom to somewhat conceal them. It does look much better up there as well as provide protection for it.

Great idea, I used an old mudflap of a semi truck ( cut to fit the licence plate) and mounted the licence plate to that. Mud flap is heavy enough not to flap around in the wind while driving, but flexes going off road and doesn't bend the licence plate when off road and back of ramp close to hitting the ground. Thanks for the great idea.

I just got home with a new 2016 3800. 1st thing I did was relocate the lic plate. I purchase a new metal lic place holder and installed it on the center hinge of the tailgate using the existing bottom 2 bolts. I then flipped the existing lic plate light to point up, seal the hole with a large rubber grommet where the wiring comes thru and drilled a new drainage hole in the lic plate light and sealed the lens with clear silicon. Looks great.Sorry no pics at this time-already put back into storage.

First of all - welcome to the forum!
Second - pictures are worth a 1000 words and boy do we like pictures!
Third - it may help to list your trailer & TV info in your signature area - it helps when you need help or just want to show off a mod you did!

license plate reloction
I'm late to reply, but here is where I moved our plate to on our Voltage. I used a small piece of aluminum and drilled two holes in it to use the hinge bolts on the left side of the door. I drilled a small hole in the steal below the hinge and installed a grommet for the license plate light wire to go through. I purchased an LED license plate frame on Amazon for about $22.00 and it does not touch the back door other than at the aluminum bracket at the bottom.

Notice sleeves or bushings on those springs. Did you add those or did they come that way? Does that make the door a bit easier to lift?

They came that way, they are to keep the spring from digging into the aluminum hinge. They are pretty thin, it does not assist with lifting the ramp.

I'm actually thinking of putting thicker tubes on my springs so I can get a bit of help with the ramp near the ground.
My 3950 came with 5 springs - I added up to the max (7?) which helps a lot.
