New purchase, Need help!

We're down to deciding between two Voltage 3970, one 2017 model and one 2016 (both new). The dealer discounted the 2017 down to within $3000 of the 2016, and we're hoping for opinions on a couple points:

-is there any way to estimate the extra devaluation of the older model year if we were to sell or trade in a few years?

-the 2016 has a "custom" matte black paint package - the paint doesn't matter much to us, but again, do you think it will make much difference in value in the long run?

I forget what they call that matte paint package, but someone here has it. Check and ask them about maintenance. I don't know if it's less or more work than a regular paint job (assuming both units are full paint, right, as that is a $10,000 option. Only suggestion I can make is check resale difference in RV Trader for two like models a year apart, or call your insurance man for a current valuation on both. Frankly, I'd take the 17 if they were EXACTLY alike. Either way, be happy with the choice. Good luc.

New RV

devaluation!!! thats a understatement. RV's are worth 1/2 what you paid for them new in the first year. Then after that about $1,000 a year less every year. Even if you take care of them. That is why I got mine used. I paid $11,800 + tax for mine. I would be lucky to get $10,000 now after 2 years of fixing it all the time. I enjoy messing around with it. My wife thinks Iam busy!! It is still fun and I do not care about the devaluation of the trailer.

Don't think about the cost, Just get the one that's best for you and the family, we have all started somewhere, I started with a Truck Camper, then 21ft Trailer, then 32ft 5th wheel, then 39ft Toy Hauler, now 43ft toy Hauler, I still have one of the biggest Lance Truck Camper for use in Winter, The minute you drive it off the lot, its gone way down, but after 35 years, of fun, Travel, and meeting great people, like I have met here, WOW I'm glad I did it way back went....Enjoy and get out there....Time is Passing...LOL

I think cost wise it is a wash between the 2017s price & the 2016s paint. I remember when I bought my trailer they were about to start shipping the next years model and it would have cost me another $10K to wait to get the new model year.

I started with a Truck Camper, then 21ft Trailer, then 32ft 5th wheel, then 39ft Toy Hauler, now 43ft toy Hauler...

In 2000 I crawled on to land and started with a truck camper, so I could still tow the 1994 cuddy cabin, then in 2008 a 25 ft travel trailer, the next year a bigger 32 ft travel trailer, then a 2012 38 ft 5th wheel toyhauler and now a 2014 Voltage 3895 43 ft toyhauler... small world!!!

Make sure the slides work properly. Voltage changed from the gear-drive to a cable system and some of the cable slides don't extent out all the way.

As far as the price, figure 30-35% off the sticker price to get a good deal. Dealer discounts mean nothing to me, I can always do better.

Midland would be on your way to Katy... if you need a place to stop over let me know. Mike's RV Park has long pull through sites (the curb) and full hook ups (on the side of the house).

I would stay away from the Matt Black finish. It will be harder to clean and keep cleen. It will also absorb more heat from the sun.

Now, I'm wondering if this is your first Toyhauler or even first RV.

Please remember that you're going to have issues, we all have. But most are not that difficult to correct, and spending half a day beats leaving at the dealer for a couple of months.

That's what this forum is all about. Ask any questions, we're all here to share what we've learned and help you have an enjoyable experience.

One of my thoughts to you is...before you take delivery...go though the Voltage listing of what the trailer comes with, right down questions you have about how things work, and then have the dealer rep doing the PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection) show you that everything works...before you take delivery.

Howdy from Texas. I have a 2016 Model 3970. Look at the threads on slide outs not going all the way out. My 3970 leaks water around the bedroom slide. Over a year now trying to get it fixed. We are on our third attempt at getting it resolved. Check rubber seals on the 2016 model you are considering. If the seals rest on the window frames, you will probably get water behind them. Many are having this problem. Water damage is likely and mold and mildew can cause serious illness. Check on top of your slides when they are out and you will see that the slides do not retract all the way. This is a design flaw and if I had know about this, I would have opted out of the Voltage and walked away from my deal. Maybe shop for other Brands before you decide.
