Exterior Caulking/sealant

I am planning on re-sealing around the exterior bins,signal and clearance lights. I have no idea what type of sealant to use. Has any one resealed their exterior bin area etc and can recommend a good product to use?

Not done any yet Coops, but i would look for something in the Marine shops that is going to stand up to the Elements..Good luck my friend & let us know what you choose so i can do the same..

Try a silicone based caulk used for bath tub or if you want a tight almost no removal seal use 5200 from the marine stores

Give your dealer a call and speak to the service people, they should be able to point you in the right direction. Make sure you talk to a service tech though, sometimes parts people have a tendency to sell whats on the shelf.

Daryl's right Coops. I did a workshop on sealants from the dealer and basically here's is the most important thing I got out of it.

NEVER use silicone on an RV. Silicone does not bond to any surface in a waterproof manner. There are two types of sealants that you need. One flows slightly after application and is used on roofs around vents and over screw heads and the other is for sealing around seams on the walls. Off the top of my head I do not remember the brand names but buy them from your dealer.

In the workshop the tech said he even uses these products in his house and never uses silicone for anything.

I've had good luck with Dicor. As said, don't use silicon. There's a self leveling for up on the roof and a stiffer one for the vertical surfaces.

Make sure the surface is clean and DRY!

I had not heard of Dicor, I googled the name and it appears it may be used by the manufactures. I had some bad spots on some of the trim when our TH was at the factory shop and I caught it as we were picking the unit up. (as in it was outside and cold), and Dan had one of his guy's dig it off and renew it. By warm weather it was already pulling loose. Dan gave me a tube each of that stuff and the roof stuff that they use. Problem is it's in Michigan and we're here in Florida. We'll be home at the end of next week and I'll see if I can find it and post what it is.

Gordon, Looks like you are the guru of sealants so a couple of questions.
Seeing as I just re-applied the sealants/caulk on the bedroom slide last week and then I read the posts here that say don't use sillycone on an RV, (my luck, day late and dollar short).
1. Do I need to dig it off and replace it or wait until it goes bad again?
2. Any special cleanup instructions before applying, cleaning with alcohol or other product? Would be wasting good whiskey!
3. Any suggestions to keep the darn stuff from turning brown/black as in dirty twice as fast as the rest of outside?

Thank's for any advice here, that one bugs the heck out of me and drive's me to the above mentioned product!

Hey folks... I took Gordon' s advice and and didn't use silicone...used a good brand of high quality RV "stuff" like that tech term....... not sure if it was Dicor or not...will post name later.

Thanks for the info Coop, Can't read on the tube, is it self-leveling or would it be good on the belt-line trim?

doesn't say self leveling...hop you can read it...so it is side ways...says its good for ensuring a watertight seal on most any thing rv..I got the clear and it is paint able.
