Ammonia smell is also dangerous

The ammonia smell may come from cleaning solutions you wife used to clean your refrigerator. It cannot be from accumulation of ice on the cooling system. More likely it comes from a refrigerant...

You have a gas leak.

It can be explosive.

Get it fixed immediately. Turn the gas to the frig off until then.
