electric valves don't take up any more room than the manual ones. I changed mine out to electric and LOVE it. Very much worth the $$$ since you will need to replace the mechanicals again someday.

Aren't they the type of valve that is held in with four bolts between the two pipes?

mine got stuck and I had them replaced with electrics.... best thing!
