Remove as much as reasonably possible. I use plastic or wooden scrapers and a heat gun set on low.

Then wipe down with denatured alcohol.

I haven't but it is on my list. The game plan is to clean all the existing sealant (or as much as I can) then to use the Eternabond (actually a different product, but similar) around the perimeter...
