I think its 2 way. Gas or Electric(Auto). Gas needs 12v to run. Electric (Auto) will run on AC until power is lost then it will try to go to Gas but then it will still need your 12v from a battery.

I noted that I too have poor at best radio reception. I'm betting there is no antenna connected... I have the Jensen Radio / DVD unit. I will likely pull it this weekend and find out for sure.
