Pulled the plug....

Got rid of my 2008 GMC 2500HD 6.0 today and went with a 2012 F150 EcoBoost SS CRW w/ Max Tow & 6.5' Bed! The kids love the back seat!

Re: Pulled the plug....

Thanks! Only one problem... have to fold in one of the mirrors to get in the garage door! Never had that with the GMC and they are basically the same type of folding mirror. Hope it doesn't rain or snow too much...

Re: Pulled the plug....

You will LOVE the way the Ecoboost tows. It will climb hills in 4th gear at only 2,900 rpm that had every other engine I've towed with screaming at over 4,000 rpm. It tows more like a diesel.....very little downshifting. We love ours, and tow nearly 9,000 pounds with it.

Re: Pulled the plug....

Very Nice, we've been fumbling around trying to make a decision on an upgrade to the EcoBoost, just haven't been able to pull the trigger yet. A co-worker has one an absolutely loves it. Keep us posted on how it works for you while towing and unloaded. I really like the fuel economy #'s especially while unloaded, should make a good all around use vehicle.

Re: Pulled the plug....

So far it's been a great all around vehicle. A lot smoother ride than my GMC was, but that's not comparing apples to apples either. The kids love the big back seat. Only about 100 miles on it and have to get close to 1,000 miles by Thursday before we head out camping... I'll let you know how it tows after that.

Re: Pulled the plug....

I'm interested in real-life information about this engine as well. My concern is longevity when used as a tow vehicle. Time will tell though but so far results are encouraging.

Do you tow with it in Drive and engage the Tow/Haul feature? Or do you use the Manual or SST (if equiped) options?

Dave.

Re: Pulled the plug....

Wow...trannys are sure changing.....what ever happened to the standard "3 on the Tree" or the automatics with only "D" and "L".
I do remember the big back seats......

Re: Pulled the plug....

Yeah, this one blew me away a little. It's got P R N D M 2 1. Good thing I passed my last eye exam!

In M you can actually do the shifting like a manual transmission, but with a button. 1 stays in first and 2 stays in second. Good I guess if you're ever in a parade....

With the SST you can lock out gears. So if towing I can lock out 6 and it will never go in that gear.

So far so good though. Pushing 19 MPG back and forth to work. And the ride is so nice!

Dave.
I tow in the Tow/Haul mode and lock out sixth gear. I get about 1 or 2 mpg better in fifth......just seems to make lots more torque at just that bit higher rpm.
For very slight downhills, I will let it go to sixth, and then lock it out again on the level.

Re: Pulled the plug....

Thanks Glenn. I towed with it last night for the first time and all I can say is WOW!!!

I can't believe how quick it gets up to speed while pulling. Much better ride than my 2008 GMC 2500HD 6.0 had too! I was very impressed...

And here's the view from our campsite this weekend!

Re: Pulled the plug....

One thing I will have to do is get ride of the 4 Ply "P" rated tires and go with a 10 Ply "LT" tire in an "E" load range. Too much side-to-side give with the current tires while towing.

Re: Pulled the plug....

After 2 trips under the belt towing, a couple things I noticed:

The "P" tires have to go. To washy and don't feel real safe towing with them.

There seems to be a little "shimmy" of some sorts when taking off and turning at the same time. As soon as you straighten out it's fine.

Towing gas mileage is a bit disheartening. 7.2 MPG. Thought I would see better, seeing that my 6.0 got 9 MPG.

Re: Pulled the plug....

Hey Dave. It sounds like you could just have a few New Truck Blues . Maybe your gas MPG might settle down a little once you get used to driving a V6 truck instead of a V8. My buddy has one and he says the difference is like night & day .
What Pressure have you been running in the Stock tires ??
