Re: Pulled the plug....

Interesting thread. I'm surprised that you only get 19 mpg to work and back. That's about the same as I get with my 5.4L. I get 12-13 litres per 100 km which is 18.8 mpg. Towing I get 20 litres per 100 km which is about 12 mpg. Mind you, I'm towing a 24 footer though.
Perhaps yours will improve once it gets completely broke in.

Door sticker says 35. Max tire pressure is 44. They are set at 35-36, which is what the dealer had them inflated to. Tire shop guy also said to follow the door sticker.

Last week I was looking into getting a LT "C" load range tire. Only 4-5 manufacturers make a "C" in my size (265/75/R18). From my readings I see that some are going with a "E" load range and only inflating to 50 PSI towing (because of the rim limits). I was also looking into a "D" load range but then have to go with a 265/70/R18.

Re: Pulled the plug....

My door sticker says 35 as well but running them at the max on the tire of 44 only when towing makes a big difference.

I too noticed the side to side sloppiness while towing at the minimum recommended psi of 36.....inflated the rears to 43 and the fronts to 39, and it made a real difference in the stability....especially in cross winds.

Re: Pulled the plug....

I put on a set of Michelin LTX M/S2 E this morning. Inflated to 40 PSI empty and they ride really nice. Tomorrow I tow the trailer to the dealer so I'll pump them up to 50 and see how it goes (per the tire store manager).

This thread makes me excited to pick up our new trailer! We have a 2012 FX4 with the ecoboost.

Appreciate the tips in the thread as well.

Question for the Ecoboost, have you guys been using premium fuel in it when towing?

Going out tomorrow and just looking for some insight. Towed it to the storage unit on Tuesday and felt good, some minor adjustments to the WDH is needed though, I think anyways (felt a little pulling on the back end and the truck wasn't 100% level.)

Dave.
I typically lock out 6th (as it rarely uses it anyway) as the torque and rpm just seem better in 5th for towing. I get better mpg in 5th than 6th too, as you are a bit higher in the torque curve.
Yes, use the tow/haul mode -- and you have to keep turning it back on every time you turn off the truck. Using t/h is the ONLY way to tow, and you will notice a difference in the way it hold gears and downshifts for hills. However, there have been a few times when the truck wanted to be at 5,800 rpm in 2nd gear going downhill, trying to use compression to hold my speed. At those times, I shift out of t/h, and manually select 3rd, then use more brake to slow the rigs. Once back on the level, I engage t/h again.
I love the EcoBoost for towing, but it simply is not big enough to slow you down on steep downhills -- it sure tries though.
As far as tire pressure, I use 39/40 front (as the equalizer hitch does move pressure forward), and 42/43 rear. Once the stock Goodyear Wrangler passenger tires wear out though, I am going to go with a good set of LT Michelins for their stiffer sidewall.

The owner's manual "suggests" premium fuel when towing. I have used regular gas for thousands of miles, and then experimented with a tank of premium here and there --- its been really hard to tell any difference in capability or in mpg.
I would say that if you are going to tow very near the truck's maximum rating of 11,300 pounds (not bad for only 214 cubic inches!!) then I'd use premium exclusively. If you are around 75% of that rated towing weight, try a couple of tanks and see what you think --- but it's NOT required when towing. Mine seems to do fine on regular towing 9,000 pounds.

Don't overdo it on the weight distribution --- you want the truck to squat just a bit or you will have too much weight transferring to the front of your truck and the back of your trailer.
Our F150 squats about an inch and a half when all hooked up -- unloaded, the truck is higher in the rear --- all hooked up it is just slightly down in the back. but the trailer is perfectly level, which is also something that you want when towing.
