Spare Tire

A question; Just picked up my new 2021 Kodiak Cub 175 BH.

The Spare tire, is mounted on a nice Rim, just like the main Tire Rims.

A crazy Question; How do You get the Spare, off of the Spare Tire carrier??

The issue being, they used small/thin nuts to hold the tire on the carrier, HOWEVER a Socket does not fit in there.

The thin nut, is down in the bolt hole recess, so the Socket does not fit in there.

I even bought a thin wall Socket, and it will not fit in??

Hate to have found this problem, if I needed the Spare, in the middle of No Place.

Thoughts?

I can’t help you with the solution being my spare tires are mounted differently than yours but I think it’s great you had the foresight to check that before you headed out on the road, Many years ago with our first KZ trailer I was surprised to find most don’t come with a jack or lug Wrenches, I’m sure someone will have an answer soon for you, Our best from Central Florida

You just have to find a wrench or socket that will reach in. I replaced the nut with a security locking lug nut. I also replaced the nut used to assemble the mounting bracket with a security locking lug nut as well.

The security locking lug nuts came in a multi-pack. One on each axle wheel, two on spare, one on mounting bracket bolt.

By the way, the mounting bracket on mine broke. Almost lost the whole spare wheel. Consider improving the mount.

My mounting bracket was designed for a smaller wheel bolt pattern. A thin flat plate was added to reach a second bolt hole. The thin plate is inadequate. I replaced with wider and thicker piece.

I wish you good luck and happy trails ahead!

Try vice grips.

I had the same problem. Turns out the nut is metric rather than SAE. Got a thin walled metric socket and it fit. Replaced the factory bolt with a larger SAE bolt and nut plus a large washer over the hole. Now I and/or a tow truck operator can get the spare off.

They got it on, you can get it off, may take a bit. You might need to grind down an old socket to get in there. When you get it off, go to an auto parts store and buy a couple of lug nuts problem gone.
