Reese Hitch/Safety Plate

Quick question. I have a Reese 26.5K 5th wheel hitch factory installed on my truck. When I run the king pin in, it, hitch locks up fine and I can run the bail pin thru the safety plate without an issue. Trailer tows fine. When I don't have the king pin in the hitch (no trailer), I can engage the jaw and the handle locks in the proper position, however the safety plate that the bail pin goes thru ( pin that runs thru the handle to ensure hitch is engaged) does not automatically line up and I have to manually move the safety plate to store the bail pin. It' not a big deal, but I'm wondering if everyone's is that way. It seems to me that I used to just engage the handle and I could run the pin thru, but not so sure if my memory serves me correctly. Again, trailer tows great, just want to make sure everything works the way it's supposed to. Thanks in advance.
