Help, stove fire!

Our Atwood Wedgwood Vision stove/oven caught fire. There is a plastic sleve at the end of the burner tube (stovetop) that melted and caused flames to come back through the control knob. The other two burner tubes have the same sleeve, is it supposed to be in there? That was no fun.

Holy S*&T dude, I wish I could be more help, but I wont be at my TT until next week to look.

Can you take a picture, so we know what to look for?

You have had the worst luck! I have tried to give you words of encouragement, but at this point I am at a loss of words.

I am sorry for you bad luck with your TT.

I'll have to wait on the pics. Minimal damage, somehow that plastic sleeve melted closed and the flame was blowing back out the on /off valve and through the hole where the knob slides on. The wife said she heard a "poof" and the flame was out, when she turned the knob up, the flame came out of the front of the stove. My theory is that a propane tank ran out and when it auto switched somehow a little back draft sucked the flame back where it isn't supposed to be.

You would think an RV stove would be made to handle that situation. We're just happy we didn't burn to the ground. Oh well, good times.

That's the burnt plastic sleeve, I thought it was burnt food at first. I'm 99% sure that it's supposed to be in there.

My stove did the same, I also thought it was burnt food that spilled over. I cleaned it out and put it back together, it has worked fine ever since.

Here's a link to follow: http://www.atwoodmobile.com/manuals/...%201.16.08.pdf
The item that burned is called a "burner bushing." It is, on every diagram, item #6. It is a fitting that mates the post-orifice (with air drawn) tube to each burner path. They mate like fingers in a glove. I don't know why this was made of plastic, and I don't know if they are needed for sure. I would call Atwood at the top of this page to explain your situation.

Did you replace the bushing?

No. Seriously, I thought the bushing was Bush's beans. I scraped it out with a knife and put it back together. That was back in the summer, so I've probably used the stove at least a dozen times since without a problem.

Now I'm not sure if I should try to order a bushing or just leave it be?

Let me predict! Atwood will tell you that these pieces are necessary, but they could not catch fire because that area of the tube will not (according to their computer projections) get hot enough to cause combustion. So it must be your fault. LOL

Just talked to a very nice guy at Atwood, he basically said this happens all the time. The RV mfg installs the burners and he said they always bend the center burner support when installing and it causes an air gap down by that bushing, it sucks in air and bingo, camper fire.

He had a more detailed explanation, but was hard to understand...
I went out and checked, and yes, the burner tube doesn't fit right around the gas valve.

Without even asking, he asked for my info and is sending out a bushing.

HornedToad, you better order one of those!!

Very good information Thank You. Now I will have to go look at mine as a prevention.

Wow, i'm surprised this didn't happen sooner. I received the bushing today and installed it, I never realized how far the burner tube was pulled away from the valve body. It just took some channel locks and a little patience to bend the mounting bracket to where it's supposed to be. The other two actually had a small gap, I was able to just slightly bend those by hand.

Everyone needs to check their stoves, it's hard to believe that Dutchman would slap something together that could potentially set your rig on fire.

This is where the burner that caught fire was originally positioned. It may have been on the valve body by 1/16".

Here's how they are supposed to look, snugged up to the valve body stop.

Great photos, Dawniewest! It just reinforces my assertion that these RVs are designed fine, and use quality components. But then things get screwed up on the assembly floor by the bozos who put them together! Aaron and my ACs, the recent slide assembly, the lady who's heater wasn't even wired in, and now this. The list goes on and on!

Dang Dawniewest, you have made me very uneasy about the trailer I'm about to pick up. At the very least, I'll be able to search your name and get a list of things to inspect

There was also recall from 2013? for the stoves. Yours should be outside of that date range.

"he said they always bend the center burner support" - If that's the root cause why aren't you replacing that too? I can't get over to the camper right now but that sounds like it should be a recall item.
