New Owner - Gen Problems

I just picked up the Voltage 3970 this afternoon. I filled REAR fuel with about 7 gallons of gas to start gen. (Onan 5500) We can not get it to start. If we squirt some fuel into carburator it runs then dies. SO, we think it is not getting any fuel. We are priming for 30 seconds and then trying to start.

I ready the manual and it said something about a fuel shut off valve possibly being installed. I did not see one but, didn't really look.

ANY IDEAS would be helpful

Did you buy from a dealer. I would call them, and bring it back. Agree it sounds like no fuel is getting there. Wish I could help more. I have a 3305 and the fuel caddy and generator use the same tank so I can’t help in that department.

Sorry.

We called the dealer. The unit was supposed to be checked out. It is obvious they did not start the generator. I find it curious the gen has 0000 hours on it. They will contact us on monday.

What a bummer and while I can’t be certain either they are liars or maybe made a mistake. Either way stinks for you.

When I took delivery of mine we did a walk through and made sure everything was working. I am surprised they didn’t do that with you. Of course that didn’t catch a fuel gauge problem but that is another story.

I might suggest a note pad in your trailer and jot down issues the first few times you use it. Don’t take it back in for warranty work until you have had it out a few times. Trust me, you will miss something.

And even if you are the nicest guy in the world you need to let them know how upset you are that they delivered to you without a working generator.

Good luck.

What code is it flashing probably 3-6. Will it stay running if you choke the carb butterfly? If so it may have something stuck in the carb. Pull the bowl and check. I have had mine clog from the brown lock tight they put on the fuel pumps. Broke off and a small piece clogged my carb.

Fuel pumps on these onans are notoriously crappy, mine would run for 20 then shut off, replaced fuel pump and no problems since.
