Well I finally broke down & pulled the trigger on ordering the antenna & mounting plate last night. Still haven't decided if I'll crawl my fat ass up on the roof to install it, to hire someone else.

I do still have a question on the inside equipment. Did you guys actually "buy" your Genie receivers, wireless bridge, and mini-genies from someone (so that they are your property), or are just paying a monthly 'use fee' to DirectTV for them?

Based on some of the threads I've read, I'm still not straight on that... especially when I see that you can get them from Amazon and other retail outlets.

If you actually bought them somewhere... what's your opinion on the best place to buy?

From what I can see you can buy equipment from Amazon, eBay, winegard and direc. Once you activate ownership reverts to direc. Ended up buying my equipment from direc. My total cost for dvr/receiver and mini bedroom receiver was roughly $300 which was consistent with other vendors however at the end direc gave me a $100 discount. For me install was quite easy , fun and rewarding. Getting antenna on roof maybe an issue. I was still able to grab antenna and climb up extension ladder. Units weighs around 55lbs. If you have any other questions about install let me know. I talked to camping world and they wanted around $800 to install crazy

I might add the other bonus buying from direc was there was no freight charges. Direct had installer come to my house delivered equipment and he would have done receiver install. He did leave an additional splitter and SWM power supply. He also left his phone number to call if I had any problems. I did call when activating the fellow was very helpful. Since I had genie home system direc would not let me buy another genie. Later when speaking to installer he also mentioned one genie system was all I could have.

First outing with new traveler directv antenna. So last Tuesday my wife and I decided to do our at least annual trip to ebbetts pass area just outside of markleeville California. The weather was great cool clear evenings and highs around 73. Our boondocks spot site silver creek although still flowing a real comment on the west's ongoing drought. Our elevation was at 6,500 ft so we did use some heat at times. Of course our spot is surrounded by some tall pine trees and one in particular seemed to block the area where satellite dish needed to see. Fired up antenna and watched for about 5 minutes. Thought for a bit we might have to move but finally the unit made contact. It worked beautifully and amazed me being able to see through the pine trees. Brought my bicycle along to do some riding. Managed again this year to climb ebbetts pass about 8 miles long for the pass with a gain of about 2,200 feet of altitude. If you have never been over this pass it is quite amazing with grades of 24%. Yow. Cheers!!

Fun spot have been going there for years. Don't know if you have had dinner at the stonefly in markleeville but always end up going there at least once. Our timing was good as this was the last weekend they are open for this year. Hope you get your rig back soon... Great time of the year to get out there!!
