Converter

Does anyone know if the converters in the 2012 models are rated for the new gel batteries? I was looking at getting one to replace the existing (4 year old) basic deep cycle battery and the salesperson questioned if the converter would work with it. I wasn't sure...

Thanks.
Dave.

Re: Converter

As far as I know, it makes no difference with the 3-stage charging of most converter/chargers. I replace the battery on my last trailer with a Deep Cycle Gel Battery and had no problems.

Re: Converter

My converter/charger crapped out...awaiting a replacement as I type this.
I wouldn't think it would matter.... just wondering what the concern would be?

Re: Converter

Me too, Coops. But before I invested $160.00 in a gel battery I wanted to make sure it was good.

I asked the salesperson what the difference is between the gel acid and liquid acid deep cycle batteries. She said the gel was made to withstand vibrations better, typically in marine applications. She said you also get a more even draw from the gel battery.

Re: Converter

Was she trying to up- sell you on a new converter/charger?

Re: Converter

The charging voltage settings for an AGM/Gel battery are lower than a wet cell deep cycle battery, a standard convertor will work but be aware that the higher charging voltage may/will shorten the life of a gel battery. Some convertors and charge controllers have adjustable charge setpoints in order to accommodate the differrent battery types. I have a few links to some reading material, but I'm out of pocket working and won't be home until Saturday, I'll post links when I get home. I really like the AGM batteries and we use many many of these in the Telecom industry, less maintenance and typically a smoother discharge curve.

Cheers

Re: Converter

Just got an email from my salesperson. She said she talked to a Kodiak tech and he said "not to use the gel batteries in the Kodiak". No reason given, just that statement.

Dave.
