Battery acid level and topping off?

Hi all, we've had our camper (Kodiak 240BHSL) for about 10 months. How often should I be checking the battery acid level? I popped the cover today on one of the batteries and the fluid (acid) was about 1/2" from the top. Should I top them all the way off? Do I use distilled water?

Use distilled water for long battery life. Fill each cell until the cat's eye appears. You'll noticed a distinct shape of the water when it fills to the eye.

I use one of these Lumax LX-1618 Black 64 oz./2 Quart Plastic Battery Filler : Amazon.com : Automotive. It rides along side of my batteries and is full of distilled water. It makes filling easier. I do have four six volt batteries so I need all the help I can get.

The device stops adding water when the battery is full.

These battery fillers are also available at most auto parts stores.
