Day 8 of ice storm power outage

I think i'm starting to go a little stir crazy guarding the generator. We got our internet back yesterday, still no power. I took a few pics of the carnage to share. These are all on our street, luckily the house (minus a smashed railing) and camper survived.

Fun... NOT! I haven't had to deal with an ice storm of that magnitude in several years. But we did have that massive tornado outbreak back in April of 2011, power was out for 48 hours. Worst one for me was Hurricane Fran in 1997, we lost power for 14 days.

Stay warm and eventually it will all melt

WOW! at least you have a generator. Are you able to get gas for it? Glad to hear you didn't have major damage.

We drove 120 miles on Monday to get the generator, that was the closest one available. I bought two 5 gallon gas cans, we've been spending around $25 a day.

Good ole global warming. We have snow here in Nv, also. We don't get ice storms like that, though. Just a little pogonip (ice fog). Good luck, and break out the cribbage board.

I wish, there wasn't anytime to be picky, we ended up with a 5500 watt continuous Generac. It's a big ole pig.

I kept my big old pig of a Ridgid 6500 watt generator (made by Generac) from my TT days. I've had it since '08 with 1700 hours, never a problem. The OHV engines are not as quiet as a Honda but not as loud as most. We had an ice storm last month and I had to pull it out to take over to my daughters house to run the furnace & fridge, I'm glad I kept it!!!

Hope you thawed out enough today for the linemen to get to work.

Power came back on last night for five minutes, then a transformer exploded and set the pole on fire. Good times. I knew something was wrong when about 30% of the house still didn't have power.

If all goes well, we should be back up sometime today.

Power came back on this afternoon, but something is terribly wrong. All three bathrooms have no power and the bedrooms are the same way. One gas unit works, one does not(main house). Full kitchen power except for half the plugs (2 circuits). Garage outlets work, but doors and lights don't. This sucks.

Reset all the breakers. If not then time for a Meter(DMM) to trace problem.

Did all that, i'm fairly certain it's a bad transformer. I have to work tonight, but i'll check the main in the morning.

Sounds like your only getting one leg of your service. Be careful running 220V appliances, it could cause damage. Most likely going to be a utility problem.

Check all of your GFI outlets, they often pop when power is restored, especially if the power flickered a few times before coming on solid.

Yup, we're running on 120v, one leg is stone cold dead. The only 220v we have is the dryer and furnace, and they don't have power going to them anyways. The voltage remains steady so for now it stays on, at least I can save some money on generator gas. They are calling for a low of 10f Thursday night, I hope we're back up by then. I have a bad feeling they aren't taking any single residence problem too seriously.

Powers on! A supervisor saw the problem from the ground, and a bucket truck came in and fixed it in less than 5 minutes.

Time for some day drinking.

Excellent!

We are pretty lucky in that we are at the end of the road, but the loop we are on has a couple of large poultry operations that are on the "A" list. So our power gets back on pretty quickly most of the time. Knowing most of the guys on the line crew doesn't hurt.
