Weather alert radio

Does anyone have experience with weather alert radios?

What do you have and would you recommend it? Do you have to set the region code for wherever you are staying? Is there anything else I should know prior to purchase?

I use the My Radar app on my phone. My phone knows my location and it will alert me to impending weather. We were in the Pensacola area a few years ago and the alert awoke us to a big storm coming our way. We were on the road in no time and outran the bad weather.

I use a portable pocket size weather radio from midland. I like the fact that I can place it in the bedroom next to the bed. It has a power cradle that preserves battery power. I like the fact that I can operate it on the battery and pick it up and bring it into the living room. Take the batteries out when not traveling. Make sure it is easy to set up because every time you move, it needs to be reset with the proper channel.

My cell phone works ok for tornado warnings in my vicinity but doesn’t give me the information about approaching storms in the realm of marine warnings which tells me the intensity and direction of the storms and if there is any tornadic activity within the approaching storms.

I used to use a weather radio. Now I use my mobile phone and several apps. Get all kinds of severe weather alerts, including tornado, high winds, lightning, etc. I have them monitor the current location we’re in as well as our home location so we get a heads up while away. On my iPhone I use: Dark Sky, WeatherBug, Tornado from the Red Cross, and CodeRed Mobile Alert apps. I also have a police/fire/emergency scanner app if I want to listen in to emergency responders. One does need Wi-Fi or cellular connection to work. In case of a total disaster, I have a small eton FRX5 AM/FM/NOAA alert radio that’s rechargeable with battery backup with a hand crank that can also be used to charge mobile devices. It has an LED light and you can add a solar charger. There’s a newer similar model.
