Tongue weight

Hi all,

I'm going to be weighing my trailer next week as I haven't ever weighed it before. I bought it last year at the end of July. The problem is that the local truck stop won't let me unhitch the trailer to get a total weight in order to calculate the tongue weight. If I weight the whole rig, trailer and vehicle, then unhook in the parking lot and weigh the vehicle, will I get a reliable tongue weight with the difference in the vehicle rear axle weights?

Dale

Not that way, but if you first get a weigh with only the truck on the scale, and the trailer off, then that would tell you the weight of the truck loaded. Then weigh both together, then unhitch and weigh the truck alone. The third weigh, minus the first weigh, should give you tongue weight.
Comments? Am I right, guys/gals??

If the truck stop isn't too far away, I would go weigh my truck, full of fuel, with hitch. Then the next time I was going camping, I would weigh the whole rig. That way your not doing all that hooking and unhooking.

Maybe my answer wasn't clear. In the first of three weighs, the truck and camper are hitched, but only the truck wheels, and not the camper wheels, are on the scale. That shows the truck with the added tongue weight.

Every CAT scale I have ever run across has always had a pad for steer axle, rear axle, and trailer axles. Weight the truck before you hook up to go camping with fuel and family, then as your heading out of town, put it on the scale all hooked up. Subtract the weight of the truck only rear axle from the weight of the truck and trailer rear axle and that is your pin weight. Don't over think this one.
