So, what are your 2018 plans?

Since we here on the board seem to have definitely hit the winter slow period (based on the number of new posts I've seen)... I thought I'd throw this question out there.

Having settled in over the past month in south Texas, I'm at the point where I need to get on the ball, and begin sketching out a rough plan & eventually making some reservations for the upcoming year.

Each winter I find myself torn between the same 2 issues. I'd rather stay east of the Mississippi for various reasons... but at the same time, I miss family & friends back east where I'm from.

Anyway, I've got a few ideas... and a few "maybe's"... but I'm interested in hearing about where you guys might be headed. Maybe I'll pick up an idea or 2 from you!

Short term plans are to head for North Carolina and Eastern TN for the christmas and New year's holiday. Getting the RV ready to hit the road. going to install a 50 gallon fuel tank on the titan to replace the anemic 26 gallon one it comes with. Storing (strategically positioning) the RV halfway up the east coast so we can travel from there to see things we have not experienced before. that way, New England is reachable in a reasonable amount of time as well as the Ohio Valley, Kentucky, etc. Got the flyrod ready to go!

CORRECTION to my original post, since the site won't allow me to edit it...

That should say I'd rather stay WEST of the Mississippi...

I'm based West of the Mississippi AND on the Texas coast. So I have less pressure to even participate in the RV lifestyle. But alas, I've discovered the allure.

My plans for 2018 will likely be a repeat of my 2014,2015,2016,2017
Which is, I'm ready to GO anywhere anytime I even fancy. Currently the only spot on the calendar is West Virginia in April\May. I'll be meeting up with a few crazy bikers for our annual "legends in our own mind" motorcycle adventure. Some riding on Big Bikes, and then some more woods riding on the dual sports.

But I'm more than likely to get the itch before then and do some shorter jaunts. Maybe a Padre weekend or 2, and perhaps a nice Big Bend (Terlinqua) getaway.

  1. Win the lottery
  2. Buy a bus
  3. Leave no forwarding address...

In reality I have a few more years to go until retirement, so a week or two here and there is all I am going to be able to eke out. Currently parked at CreekFire Motor Ranch outside of Savannah, GA.

Unfortunately I have about the same plan as Wahoonc. still working. So till I can afford to retire it's just a few days here a few weeks there. Can't wait to go full time.

Planning my retirement for 12/31/18 and then will be hitting the road soon after. For now until then, full timing it here in the park hosting and getting the coach ready to roll and learning everything and all the systems the easy way, parked.

We spent over 5 months in our camper this year including a 4 1/2 month trip to Alaska from South Florida. Next year we expect to camp in some state parks nearby, go to Ga. to visit family and then our annual trip to NC to view the fall foliage.

Hey ATCguy, how's that Texas coastal warmth feeling this morning?
You wake up thinking you got transported to another state while you slept?

I'm not normally sipping morning coffee to this view!
How do I get farther "south"?

What is that?? None of the death powder here, but it's a chilly 28f. How is South Texas leading middle Tennessee in snowfall totals?

It's the year of CRAZY weather on the Texas coast, that's for sure.

I admit that Christmas music sounds way different today for some reason. The lyrics make more sense. Frosty, snowman, White Christmas, Winter Wonderland.......

Ha! Yeah, as if the last 2 days of raw weather hasn’t been bad enough (temps in the mid-40s, sustained high winds of 25-30 kts.)... I woke up this morning to friggin SNOW FLURRIES!

Of all the years I decide to winter in Texas... and we’ve got snow before Boston.

I like the truck in the picture. BUT, when I googled it, it came back without the dualies! What is the cargo capacity (as far as a 5th wheel vehicle go)?

I ordered mine with the gooseneck. I heard that is better than the 5th wheel hitch.
Its definitely a Dually!

Well, after mulling over options since I first started this thread... I've decided to change things up a bit, and try something different.

Having traveled so much during the past 3-4 years, and seen most of the places I wanted to see... think i'm just gonna settle in one place for a few months. I do it during the winter, so why not the summer? Then the question became... ok, now where?

A number of locations I liked were considered, with various factors such as scenery, activities, and the availability of conveniences within a reasonable distance figured in... along with the cost & quality of available campgrounds in said area. Some locations were more desired, but campground quality left something to be desired (small sites, cleanliness, etc)... while others had nice RV parks, but the nearest good grocery store was over an hour away. Remoteness is great when you're looking to "get away" on vacation, but not so much for long term stays.

Anyway, I decided on the Yellowstone area... and as such, I've made reservations on the east side in Cody, WY. I'll be arriving just before Memorial Day, and departing just after Labor Day. Plenty of time to relax, enjoy various parts of the park 2 or 3 times/week, and have everything I may need within a reasonable distance.

Of course, all of that is subject to change if I get a wild hair to go do something different. But that's the plan for now.
