Plan D late enrollment penalty

I realize this isn't a real RV topic but it is related to RV owners that might be on Medicare or near becoming on Medicare.
I found out the hard way that I will be penalized approximately 33 dollars per month as long as I have Plan D. Providing I opt for Plan D this year. This penalty is government mandated to 'encourage' Medicare recipients to have adequate prescription coverage.
I can remember perhaps once since 2010 that I've had to have a prescription filled. Because of this I've never opted for Plan D because I felt it was a waste of money to have something I don't use.


I forgot to add, this penalty is on top of your supplemental insurance premium.

A lot of RVers are senior citizens. I have a credible plan that cost $30/year. It has high deductible and requires low personal assets. I have never used it, but I will never need to pay the penalty. The plan is only available in Wisconsin.
My wife has the same. Her drug list is long and expensive. It is cheaper to use GoodRX.com than to have a complicated supplemental plan. We just went through the math again this month.

I think I forgot to make my point in my previous post. Some old guys have memory and focus issues.
It is cheaper to use GoodRX.com than to have a complicated Medicare supplemental policy for most seniors. You don't pay GoodRX anything. You use the GoodRX insurance discount code (coupons) at the pharmacy offering the lowest price. There is no donut hole and no deductible. You do not have to get prior authorization or settle for the supplemental policy formulary. There is no arguing with a seemingly cold hearted agent on the phone.
For me it is a no brainer. I can get everything I need now over the counter for less than any supplemental police available. For my wife it took a spreadsheet, the Medicare website and multiple tries to determine that GoodRX is about $1000 cheaper than any available plan.
