Old gas

Okay - I already know it was dumb of me, but now that we established that, here's my problem:
The gasoline in my tank to run my generator is 4 years old. So...Can I just add new gas to give it new life? Is there an additive I can add to give it new life? Or will I have to siphon out the old gas before putting in new gas? I know I may have messed up the carburetor, but one thing at a time. 'Figured I'd solve the gasoline problem first.
(It has probably been six months since I started the generator. Doesn't want to start now)

My Voltage has had gas in there for 6 years. I've added to it periodically and I've added Sta-bil. So far no problems.

Thank you. That's reassuring.

I'd throw in a can of Seafoam and top off with fresh gas. Maybe a shot of ether or some kind of start aid in the carb. Only issue is you are now going to have a full tank of gas that may sit for who knows how long.

Thank you.
Well after several discussions...Gas treatment = $9.00
Siphon at Harbor Freight = $8.00

So I decided I might as well siphon out the old gas and put in fresh.

I appreciate having this sounding board.

First See if you have fuel coming out of float bowl
Loosen float bowl drain screw put cup under it
And push prime button only fuel should come out
Into cup if you are not mechanical do not do this.
Take it to a shop. Ps yes carb can be rebuilt be
Careful with gaskets. If you get fuel through add
fresh fuel to tank and let run. If not see if you’re
Getting fuel from pump to carb. I’ve worked on some
Friends 5.5 onans because they don’t run them only
Issue I’ve had on mine was out of adjustment exhaust valve
Ps aftermarket carbs are junk only go Oem. Just to be clear
If you’re not comfortable working on the fuel system take it somewhere

Old Gas

Gasoline reacts with air and water to produce various chemical products. One of the products is a fine particle that accumulates in the fuel system. In very small engines like my Honda 1000i, it is enough to block the carb jets and fuel filter.

I had to disassemble the entire fuel system, scrub, flush, and reassemble before the generator became reliable again.

The deteriorated gas may cause your engine to run poorly or fuel feed system to clog. Some engines are less affected than others.
If it were mine, I would drain the old gas and then try to run it. That will prevent further deterioration of the fuel system. I would also change fuel filter and clean the carb bowl and jets.

Next time use gas stabilizer.

+1 on drain and clean carb and jets. Once the gas has set and starts to varnish and gum up the carb you cannot likely undo it by adding fuel stabilizer after the fact. Possibly add some Gumout to the fuel in the tank to help clean the carb as it runs. As a rule I just add Sta bil to each tank when I add fuel AND run the generator at least every 4-6 weeks with a load on it for half an hour to an hour. But all that preventative stuff will not fix the current problem.

Good luck.

I have done this before. Forget and have a small motor somewhere with old gas. I would do as you have drain out old gas and refill with new. Then add copious quantity of STABILT and run out the tank. Works like a charm for me.

Gas stabilizer

Stabil and other gas preservative treatments only work to stabilise FRESH gas. They will not restore old gas.

I hear you. All I know is I had a small motor that I could not get started. Emptied the tank added fresh gas and lots of Stabilt it finally started. Took a lot of cranking.

I also learned this trick that saved my back UGHHH
