October Vacation Spot

The last few years we have been going to Big Bend in late October for a week. We thought we might change it up and go somewhere else that is in comparable or lesser distance from the N. Texas area (~6-10 hrs).

Being late October, I don't want to go anywhere cold and we like places that have outdoor activities like hiking, etc.

Someone in my office suggested Northern Arkansas. Any suggestions?

Change is appealing. But man, it's hard to beat Big Bend.

I'm more of a early March BB'er.
Just thinking about it gets me to missing it!
After a hard day of desert riding, nothing like sitting on the porch at the Starlight in Terlingua. Good food. Eclectic locals. I even have a cold beer or two when there. Shocks my family & friends. (they think I only drink coffee & sweet tea. Their right for about 51 weeks a year)

917 miles from my door. It's a jaunt, no doubt. But I love that place.

Arkansas? Northern part, up on Highway 7, it's pretty awesome too. (adventure riding on\off road) It's certainly a change from the Chisos Mountains!

5:AM
Riders meeting. 210 mile desert challenge. Starts\Ends at Starlight.
I love that crazy desert. Magical place.

Where do you do desert riding out near Big Bend?

Actually, the whole place is criss-crossed with trails. Anywhere from smoothly graded gravel, to single track case busting rock.

Oh, and if it rains, you might not get outta there. That dirt becomes peanut butter and it just builds up until your tires can't turn.

You can read all about it at two wheeled texans (twtex.com)

Weapon of choice for "The desert Challenge"
(Swapped out the tank for a 5.2 gallon one. 210 miles layout only had 1 fuel stop)

This 60 year old geezer took 4th.

They have an "Adventure Challenge" for the big bikes. Mostly pavement and groomed roads.

This is my son helping load my weapon for that event. Picking it up from a doctor in Lubbock. It's a 950cc BEAST.

Did I say I love Big Bend?

Thanks.

I might have gotten a little carried away in the "Big Bend" thread.

My kids would be rolling their eyes. "Dad and his camping\motorcycle addiction". All they know is every once in a while they discover I've packed up and disappeared. Takes em about 2 weeks before they start asking questions. If it extends to a month or more, THEN they start missing me. And finally, they'll use the "your grandchildren are missing their pawpaw" tactic.

That one works.

I'm a blessed man.

Ok, now I see that all of your machines have plates. We've Jeep'd some of those off road trails and I'd love to take my SxS but I read that all the offroading around BB NP has to be done with a road licensed vehicle.

Yes, plates are needed because it is inevitable that you will need to use the regular roads to get from one trailhead to the next.

Lajitas is awesome too. In fact, that highway from Terlingua to Presidio is just wonderful.

So do you RV in Lajitas? I have to admit I haven't really ever brought anything big to stay in Big Bend. I either tow the teardrop and boondock, or rent a cabin.
Do you have a favorite place with full hookups?

I'm afraid if I was to haul the Aerolite to Big Bend, I might never come home.

soonernation......I owe you for tolerating my behavior in your thread.

My Arkansas experience: Since I have obviously revealed the nature of most of my RV travels as being motorcycle related, it does NOT mean that they are not valid places to visit and enjoy otherwise. (Big Bend being an example) In fact, I just finished a 31 days camping binge and didn't even take a 2-wheeler of any kind.

In Arkansas, there is a motorcycle friendly motel that is called "The Hub". It is very near Marble Falls. So if Marble Falls was the general location that you were to research for nice places to setup camp, I assure you that you will LOVE exploring the area. It's got all the trappings. Small towns with great food. Bigger towns with entertainment. But most of all, I just love the terrain and nature trails. Beautiful area.

We stay at Maverick RV park. Full hook-ups. Black Jacks crossing is right across the street with food, bar & small # of shops.
