This is what I've used for years...

It's from McGard, and uses the hose clamp idea, but secures it with a special "key" like lug-nut locks for wheels. I just keep moving it from truck to truck when I trade.

Here's a link:

Nice lock. Would I be correct in assuming that lock works with the stock tailgate? I might have to get one.

I'm sure that my tailgate was stolen by accident. It was not the main target. I had a new Lazy Boy chair in the bed of my truck. I had stopped at a second furniture store to see if I could find one I liked better. I did not, and when driving home I looked in the mirror to see the Lazy Boy had blown over. I had it tied down but the rope was cut.

When I walked around to the rear of the truck the tailgate was missing. Apparently in the attempt to steal the chair they discovered the tailgate came off easily snatched it, and I returned to the truck before they finish their original plan.

I keep my tailgate locked. As it's the one with the step built-in it's big $$ to replace.

But where's the fun in that, I excersised my noodle and used a clamp I had in my toolbox (cost me 50 cents whenever I bought it) must have been in my toolbox for 10 years.

Either way it's only gonna stop the honest folks. If someone really wants your tailgate they will get it.

Yep... simply wraps around the tube where you lift if off. That said, there are specific models (sizes) depending on what truck you have. You can check their website for the part number you need.

Yeah, tell me about it. That's the main reason I got the new tailgate. I smashed mine about 2 weeks ago when I made the stupid mistake of pulling forward without verifying that the kingpin was locked into the 5th wheel hitch. OUCH! Ford wants over $1,400 for a new gate, and I'd been thinking of getting one of these anyway, so...

Oh well, now I've got those step parts I can sell on eBay.

True... but at least with a unique key, they'll need something more than a screwdriver to get the thing off.

I'm planning on getting a 5th wheel tailgate for my truck. I don't have a backup camera in the tailgate, (have one on the 5th wheel) I don't give a rat's hind end about fuel mileage, and my tailgate is already fairly hammered and I would like the convenience of not having to remember to drop my gate before hooking/unhooking the trailer.

Forgot to add mine also has the back-up camera in it. So that would be a few more $$ to the replacement cost. Don't know what I would do without the built in step. Sure wouldn't go back to a 4x2.

Got my tailgate back from the powdercoater yesterday... Glad I decided to go ahead and get it color-matched to the truck.
