Question kodiac 221rbsl

Hello I am new to this forum and rv,ing so any info is appreciated. I am looking to purchase a pre owned 221rbsl kodiac trailer. the dry weight acording to kodiac is 4604 lbs. the gross vehicle weight in the plate on the trailer is 6000 lbs. My Honda ridgline can tow 5000lbs,is it safe to tow this unit?

It will be marginal once you get your things loaded into the trailer. No real cushion.

Use the Maximum Gross Vehicle Weight of the trailer to estimated actual weight. 6000 pounds is too much. Even 5000 pounds is questionable. You will probably be constantly worried about weight. You will have to tow slowly. Risk of catastrophe will be high.

Most travel trailers on the road today are at or near their MGVW.

Agree with Persistent. I would target about 80% of your max vehicle tow rating on a fully loaded trailer as a good rule of thumb.

Keep in mind the mass of your tv has a lot do to with how your trailer handles when towing and stopping. Just because you can get the trailer moving and up to speed doesn’t mean you can safely navigate corners and stopping—especially in an emergency where stopping distances become critical. Inevitably more items will add weight to your trailer and also many people forget about all the weight of their tv when figuring GCWR and exceed that too.

A quick Google search shows that your payload capacity is between 1509# and 1580# so let's take 1540# as a base. 6000# trailer X12% for tongue weight equals 720#. Two adults ~300#, you can adjust that if needed, brings you to 1020#. What goes in the truck? Grill, generator, chairs, you get the idea. Add that up and add it to the 1020# already accounted for and you will see how close you are to overweight. My picture shows me towing 6000# with a Ram1/2 ton diesel and it really does okay. I have the 3.92 rear end with an 8 speed transmission. I towed the same rig with a Chevy 5.3 liter gasser and was severely underwhelmed with the performance. Let us know what you come up with please.

I own and tow our 2016 22ft Kodiak ultra lite tt with a 2003 GMC 1500 5.3 gas, auto transmission
The truck is rated a 8k to tow and 14k max combination total weight.
The max weight of tt is like yours 6k max.
When we go on a 10day vacation we are usually at 5500 lbs.
The truck handles great but just a wee bit under powered at 130kmiles on her
The max I have towed legally is 5500 lbs for the truck generator and 5gal gas ect. Max is 6k
Tt was 5500 lbs 50gal fresh water tank full.
This year I installed a intake full flow and a engine tuner. I should gain about 20hp and some more torque with tow setting. The transmission also got its shift points changed to tow mode with this tuner.
I get to test it in
July 4th at Pismo Beach then the the grand Tetons

The short and long answered is no. Get a real truck, 1 1/2 ton truck with a 8 to 10 thousand pound tow capacity.

A point regarding the above post. While tow ratings have some bearing on what a truck should be towing they are not the defining number. Payload capacity is much more important. As an example, my Ram Eco Diesel 1/2 ton has a tow rating of 9600# which would be ~1152# tongue weight @ 12%. Add in 325# of passengers and some cargo in the back and I am over my 1560# cargo capacity That is over what I should be towing and trying to stop. At 6000#, my actual trailer weight, the tongue is ~720# plus the above noted additions allowing me to tow comfortably and safely. I firmly believe that the right 1/2 ton truck can safely tow and stop a 6000# trailer. The answer to tow questions is not always get a bigger truck. Math is our friend.

So let me understand this math,
My GMC 1/2 ton towing max is 8k @12% would be 960 tongue wt, max
i thought the tongue wt max was 15%?
@ 8k @15% would be 1,200lbs.
Isn't tongue weight the weight on the tongue from the trailer? my TT is around 900-960 lbs
Isn't payload the weight of passenders, full gas tank and cargo of the truck (800 lbs)
curb weight 4600lbs plus payload of 800 = 5400lbs
Or is max payload max weight truck can be in my case 6k lbs including tougne weight?
I went to the scales and weighed my truck and trailer truck was 5500lbs trailer was 5500 lbs
thats what the HWY weight stiatons or DOT highway patrol officer would do to see if you were over loaded, Right or wrong .
Just trying to under stand this Happy trails
