Generator Problems

This is the control board out of an ONAN 5.5 HGJAB generator.

The generator would crank, fire and run for three seconds and shut down. Error code 45 flashed and led me to look at the board.

This toasted corner of the board seems to be a common problem with this control board.

It's an easy fix and costs less than a trip to the stealer or a Cummins dealer for repair.

Ebay from Flight Systems. They also have a troubleshooting guide to download from their actual web site.
I found the guide to be out of date regarding the part number for the board. But the guide is still concise and well presented.


If you need a board it is best to search for it from the bar code sticker on the actual board housing. Also the 'spec' letter is important. I have a J spec for my generator and the guide only goes up to E in the HGJAB model. I was able to find the J spec board by using the bar code number on the housing.
You'll want the correct board because like most electrical components it's non-returnable.
