Question Changing cable in Tent Trailer / Pop-up Lift System

I have a 1994 Dutchman Tent trailer and have to change the lift cable. I still have all my manuals however they offer no help. I am a very "handy" and I'm sure I can figure it out. Just any information or guidance in advance would be appreciated.

Me too!

I have the same issue. I currently have my tent trailer open, via splicing into the main cable and winching it open. What do I need to do to replace the cable??? is it located inside the metal housing? It is that simple? before I take it apart!

Any help, or detailed instructions would be appreciated!

Hi guys! Welcome to the forums! The last popup I replaced cable on was a 1970's vintage Viking, back in 1986!

Here is a link to a bunch of Youtube videos. From what I recall we had a broken cable and we taped the new cable to the old cable to pull it through. I do remember the ends were swedged on, had to borrow a swedging tool. We bought a big spool of cable and the fittings and made our own as we went along. I also remember we got the top up and had it blocked with 2x4's.

Good Luck and let us know how you make out!

Aaron

change cable

You will have to excuse me since it has been a few years however some of the key points would be.
- if you can get an original partfor your trailer, do so it will be the correct length and will have any finished ends you require I couldn't so I went to home Depot with my cable and matched weight.
- the raceways for my cables were under the trailer which made access very easy after removing the covers
- in my case I replaced my hand crank with an electric 12V winch, which was the best decision I ever made. With a big 12 foot top to lift if was stripping the gears on the hand crank the 12v connected to trailer power the winch came with a long able on the control which allow me to move around the trailer when lifting alone.

Hope this information is a help. The job is not hard if you have some technical inclinations.
