Ramp Door Springs

The springs on our ramp door had weakened to where I could pull them away from the door hinge with two fingers when the door was closed. Not wanting to replace the springs only to have them settle in like these ones did, I tried an experiment with spacer blocks.

So far the results are good. The door is as easy as it was when new, maybe a little better, but that’s not a measured result, effort based. The blocks are made from an automotive plastic, can't remember the proper name. Nominal dimensions of the block sides are one side 3/16”, two sides are ¼” and one side 5/16”. I’m set to ¼” on top of the spring and 5/16” on the bottom. So far so good…

Reviving this thread... as my ramp has gotten extremely heavy over the past year.

Question: where did you get the spacers? Is this a generic item you found in an auto parts or hardware store, or a specialized item used for a specific application?

My son made them for me. He has a CNC machine shop/manufacturing facility. They were 3-D printed with the automotive plastic. Mine are still working fine.

Ok, I didn't think I remembered ever seeing these before.

Any idea if he'd consider making another set for me... and if so, what he'd want to do so & send? I figure it doesn't hurt to ask...

he probably would make you a set. I'll check with him and PM you. We're headed home tomorrow. Raining like crazy here in Ocean City, oh we'll
