It does make a difference - a big enough difference for us that we bought one for the house as well. Easy install. You may need their mounting plate, you may not depending on the roof line/slope where you will mount it. You will need to drill a bigger hole for it and also a second hole off the side of the bigger hole. Lots of self leveling sealant.

You don't need to buy the entire unit... you can simply buy the antenna head portion, and install it on the retractable arm you already have.

I love the Jack, it isn't up there catching the wind like the old crank up mast.

The hardest part of the install is removing the old sealant. I found that if I heated it up some it would come of much easier. I used one of my plastic body moulding removal tools to scrape the old stuff off, if you use a metal scraper, you should round off the corners so you don't cut the roof membrane.

I used their mounting plate for the simple reason that it covered all of the old holes from the mast antenna. I only had to enlarge the hole that the rotator goes through for me install.

A definate improvement in reception.

Being 12-14" tall that brings the toyhauler up to 14' 5" over all height.

Isn't that a concern.

There was no change in clearance on my install, the Jack is down slope from the centerline, so it's no higher than the AC.

You can, but you still have remember to crank it down and also the entire unit has the built in signal strength meter.

Mine is no taller that the AC units. The AC units are included in your overall height specs.

A couple of views to show that the height is not a concern.

Yeah, well... no problem there for me. I keep a placard velcroed in front of my slide out switches. The bedroom slide doesn't come in until the antenna comes down, since I can't get to the crank with the slide in. And, I already had the Windward SensorPro Signal Meter.

Also, I like like the taller mast, as it's a good mount for my even taller WiFi repeater antenna.

But, that's why it's nice to have options... as we all have different needs & priorities.

Neat idea on the wifi antenna - once we start doing more than one week trips, I'll need to look into a solution for the lackluster wifi ranger.

No worries, Mike...unless you were thinking of mounting it on one of the AC units for even better reception!

King jack install on Rubicon 2100

I have a Rubicon 2100 with the Jensen antenna. It does not have an turning handle inside. Can I just drill the hole thru the roof and add the handle? It looks like the handle would end in the bedroom. Can the shaft to the handle be adjusted for the thickness of the ceiling? I really need to get channel 8 in for watching Battlebots.
Thanks in advance
Jim

Jim,

I'm not familiar with the Jensen, but when I replaced the Winegard with the Jack I had to enlarge the hole for the aiming shaft. The shaft is adjustable for the different attic depths.

If the Jensen has a 12V signal booster, you have the power source, so it should be a fairly easy retrofit. The only thing that you have to be concered about will be wires the the attic, so when you cut the hole you will want to be taking it slow and easy.

Thank you Jim,
The Jensen is an omni-directional antenna it has not turning capability so no hole thru the ceiling. Thank you for your response.

Jim,

You're welcome.

I understand that you don't have hole with your present antenna. I like to take the long way home, sometimes I forget that don't apply to explaining something.

The Jack needs a 12V power source for the amplifier, so if the Jensen is amplified the power is covered.

You want to take care cutting the hole, you could have wires going any which way, they are usually just laying between the ceiling and the insulation. The clearance in the attic space varies, so you want to be careful that you don't snag a wire that may be laying on the rafters.

I had the advantage of having an existing hole, so I could see the wires that were in the way and move them to safe place.

I still took the long way getting home, hope it wasn't too long.

I just replaced the crummy Jensen unit with the Jack. Wow, what a difference. I live 65 miles from Tucson and got 0 stations with the old Jensen and 13 with the Jack. So far it has worked well on the road for me. My DW really hates to miss her "Wheel of Fortune". This unit has made it possible for her to watch it when the Jensen couldn't pick up a thing.
You will have to cut a hole inside for the crank unit. You will want to drill a small pilot hole from the roof side to help guide where the interior hole should be located. Since the Jensen has a smaller footprint than the Jack the mounting plate will not be needed.
