adding a winch in the garage

I'm interested in adding a winch in the garage of my 2014 V3005 to make loading my HD dresser easier when the tires get wet. I've had some terrifying experiences and I do not care to repeat them again. I've seen one pic in an older post, but I was wondering if anyone else has done this. if so how did you mount the winch because I would want it to disappear when not in use and how did you wire it?

Adding a winch for loading a scooter has been discussed but nothing definite has been offered. There was more discussion about adding a perforated strip of metal or aluminum to the ramp for traction. This seems more doable than a winch, it can stay on the door/floor or be stored along a wall.

As I see it a winch would be just as dangerous as a slippery ramp. It would be almost impossible to pull a big bike up the ramp unless another person was operating the winch control. One hand has to operate the switch while the other hand has to balance the bike to keep it upright and steer it into positon. Then there's the control cable that will have to be long enough to reach the start of the ramp, that cable length will have to be managed to keep it from getting under the rear tire.

Then there's the angle of approach to consider. The bike will be well below the garage floor so the winch will have to be mounted high to accomodate the difference in levels. If mounted to the floor or down low the front of the bike will be pulled down as it approaches the garage floor as the best place to attach the winch cable would be at the triple tree or upper frame of the bike. Certainly couldn't attach the winch cable to the wheel or the engine. The winch cable will need to be level with the connection point once the bike is in the garage.
Then the problem of where to attach the winch to the garage becomes a problem. The walls aren't built to take that kind of strain so the other option is the floor which will cause the bike to dip once it comes forward.

That is how I perceive a winch to do the job. It'll work on golf carts and things that have more than one steering wheel in front and a low connection point. I too have pucker factor when loading the bike with a wet tire. I will go with the perforated material when I get around to addressing the problem.

Thanks for your thought Sundancer. one of the issues may be resolved with a wireless remote. the HF winch that I was looking at has a wireless remote. I'm still thinking this out

hddad - just a word of caution for you as I had an HF wireless remote winch - there is a delay from the time you push/release a button until the winch responds. Not much of one, but I was using it to hoist and engine, and winching your bike can be just a delicate an operation on a slick ramp, so use caution - speaking from experience, my friend.

Thanks for the insight Don, the more I read and hear about this the more I think that it's probably not a good idea.

I have in the past when loading at the end of a trip, lifted the nose of the Voltage nice and high in order to make less of an angle when load the Goldwing...

I have a GL1800 and I was wondering if it could be loaded or unloaded while not hooked up to the truck? Does anyone have any idea how much weight can be in the garage unhooked before it gets tippy?

Not a problem not connected to your truck. Loader my sons Victory Vision & my 600+ lb Burgman in my V3605 not connected to my truck.

Is that with just the landing gear down? Did you have any of the stabilizers down as well?

I don't have the hyd. landing gear on mine just the electric front & rear. Rear electrics were down but raised them once I need to connect to the truck. I couldn't tell any difference. As you see from the picture I also have a washer/dryer in it. So total weight in the garage is about 150 for washer, 625 for my Burgman & 825 for my sons Victory. That's more than any GW weights so don't worry.

I loaded and unloaded my GL1800 into my rig both hooked up and unhooked several times with no issues either way.

When we have trouble loading with wet tires we just toss an old beach towel on the ramps and drive right up. We also have had luck with cardboard but it can turn into a soggy mess. We have done this with mowers, motorcycles, wrecked snow plow trucks, snowmobiles (studded tracks add a different monster DONT go too fast, picking towel out of frozen bogie wheels sucks).
