I much prefer the automotive style hoist. It would cost a little more to do, but the wreckers are filled with faily new pick-ups that probably have nearly brand new hoists in them. Angle iron across the frame and mount it.

To get the tire down, my cordless drill, an adapter and a hook. When I need the tire, I hook the wheel and pull towards me as I lower it. Reverse the proceedure to stow the tire.
Thanks Jim,
The underside of our trailer is fully enclosed. I thought the automotive hoist type nested up in between the frame rails & tucked the tire up in there? Would i still be able to install with a enclosed "underbelly" ?

That design looks simple and maintenance free.

One thing to remember if you go with the automotive style, they have a habit of freezing up if you don't drop them once a year and lube them.
Exactly why I posted this

Jeff,

The OEM hoists are usually mounted under the A-frame, not my favorite place to have it. You could mount it further back and off set it to the curbside, but you would have to run some angle iron across the frame to mount it to.

If you do decide do a hoist, get one out of the newest 3/4 - 1 ton in the wreckers yard. They have a heavier cable and better gearing than the RV stuff.
