Coastal GA Tornadic Waterspout !!

Wife and I took our three girls on their first ever kayak trip. The two hour guided tour of the marshes off Bruniswick, GA started off calmly with a few clouds around to shade us from the sun. However, just past the half point of our trip we were met with meancing clouds and a tornadic waterspout to the south of us. Even our guides appeared a bit nervous and I'm sure they had never seen anything like this before. We all managed to get back to the docks safely with an abundance of prayer and paddeling like hell!

Needless to say a change of shorts were in order after this little adventure.

Re: Coastal GA Tornadic Waterspout !!

I had to look up waterspout. Never heard of that before, but if you can have a tornado over land, why not water? Apparently occurrences are rare, but photos are good enough for me. Glad you all made it back to the docks safely!

We get those once in a great while over Lake Winnebgao. The last one was about 10 years ago (and during a fishing tournament too!). Might have been one about 5 years ago too. They are interesting to see, but don't want to become close friends with them...

I've seen them quite often in a storm while I lived on the east coast of NC

I've heard they are fairly common in FL also. What did surpise me about this one is how long it lasted. I'd estimate it lasted about 15 minutes or so. And I wouldn't mind seeing one again as long as I'm not sitting just a few inches above the water.
