What is "Boondocking"?

Ha... ok... since I'm new to forum discussions on camping... have to ask...

What the heck is "Boondocking" and how did someone come about the name?

I'm assuming it just means camping in the bush (or anywhere not at an organized campground) but just thought I'd ask before assuming

Re: What is "Boondocking"?

That is what it sounds like to me, too. I thought it was called dry camping. This is what we typically do, we have never used an established campground before. With our new larger travel trailer we might, though.

Re: What is "Boondocking"?

Hey there, guys. I found this on another site. Hope it helps. ;-hap

Dry camping:
Setting up camp out in the boondocks with no hookups. It's still "dry camping" even when it's raining! Using the self containment of your rig for the purpose it was designed!

Boondocking and Variations:
Urban Boondocking, Primitive Camping: Camping / Parking your Rig without hookups of any sort. No water, no electricity and no sewer beyond what is self contained in your rig. Using it for its intended purpose. Boondockers Never admit to getting stuck in the mud. Instead: "Naw, I ain't stuck, I just dug that hole to keep the rig from getting pushed around in the wind!"

Re: What is "Boondocking"?

Ha... ok... throw "dry camping" into the mix why don't ya?

Here I thought the only options were camping in the bush (where you bring your generator) or at provincial parks where you felt spoiled having an electrical hookup and a few less bears to deal with.

Hmm... Admin... what's the chances of getting a little sticky going with terms used with respect to camping with our trailers?

Ha... thanks admin

Here's another one though... what the heck is a "toad" in respect to campers (not the aquatic kind)?

"Toad" is a name that is sometimes used insted of "Towed," mainly because the words sounds the same.

Towed = A vehicle that is towed behind another(usually a motorhome), also commonly referred to as a "Toad," is very popular among RVers.

Example below.

Love boondocking! It's pretty much the only kind of camping we do!

One of the places we have dry camped quite a few times is at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Way less people cooler as it's 8'000 elevation. These pictures were taken two years ago before we had our Voltage. This is at Jacob Lake in a National Forest Campground.

There are also lots of dirt road most don't need a 4x4 to explore areas that most folks never see.

You can still walk right out to the edge of the Grand Canyon with no guard rails like the South Rim has & be the only one around.

This last picture was taken from the tailgate of our truck while eating lunch.
Our kids are 24 & 29 only the 29 year old has been to the South Rim. After we found the North Rim we haven't been back to the South.

This is how we do it in Alberta.... Out of the forestry trunk road near Sundre Alberta. All the land is Crown land so it is free camping in the bush with no services.

Well, those pics alone are enough to just add Alberta to our "places to go" list!

Wow this is a beautiful place, no place like that down in Louisiana, mostly mud until you get to central Louisiana.
Would love to camp in a place like this!

I completely under estimated the joy of boondocking. After trying it, I realized the JOY of it. For sure the best way to camp if you like nature and/or peace and quiet under the stars.

Origins of Boondocks
Boondocks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The expression was introduced to English by U.S. military personnel serving in the Philippines at the turn of the 20th century.[3][4] It derives from the Tagalog word "bundok", which means "mountain". In the Philippines, the word bundok is also a colloquialism referring to rural inland areas, which are usually mountainous and difficult to access

These are beautiful pictures and exactly how I picture my retirement unfolding. Canada during the summers and head down to see this stuff during the winters. We are still brand new to RVing so we plan to spend this summer learning the ropes at serviced campgrounds for now.

Don,

Try it, you'll love it. We have travelled from BC to NL, half way down the Atlantic coast, Alaska and when we were still touring on the bike the Southwest. The only time we don't boondock is when we want to spend time exploring the history and culture of the urban area.

You meet some of the coolest folks when your boondocking and it tends to take you places that you would miss if your into the RV park thing.

I guess it's the wanderlust that I inherited from my dad, but we love to wander were and when we please.
