I think I see an RJ11 telephone junction in that rat's nest. Those are probably signal wires using the RJ11 connections but I'd think seriously about splicing and soldering those wires instead of using the jack and connector.
While a great application in a residential static setting I'd wonder how well they would last up there in the ceiling cavity with vibration and maybe moisture.
