Voltage Spotted Today

I lost track of the Voltages I saw in Quartzsite Az. this past weekend. Must have been 3 to 4 just in the area we stayed in off Dome Rock Road.

This past weekend my daughter was married In Carlsbad. Its just two miles south of the RV park we found to stay at. Was parked between two Voltages. On our left a triple axle pulled by a black Dodge from Wyoming. On our right was also a triple axle from Texas. Didn't see their tow vehicle.

We are in Boulder City with a 2014 3605 epic, all weather. We were in Frigid North Carolina in Dec-Jan and high tailed it here to thaw out. Next Monday we start the trip to Gualala River Redwood Park in Northern California for our first Workamping gig. We leave here then to Morrow Bay CA, - Visalia CA - Sacramento CA - Vallejo CA - Duncans Mills CA then Gualala from Apr.- Oct. Hope to see you on the road or in camp. 'Gator a silver ram dually 3500 pulls "Dreamcatcher Lodge" our 2014 Voltage home, full-timers.

Greetings from still chilly North Carolina! We are hoping to become full timers in our Voltage in the next year. I am curious, have you had issues finding a park? How far out in advance do you call for a spot? We will be very flexiable with our travels, but do want to follow the warm weather. Any tips are appreciated!

We caught a brief glimpse a Voltage yesterday. It was headed south on Hwy 74/76 into Wilmington NC. Have no other details as we were crossing the Hwy after it went thru the intersection. Sure wish it was our turn to hook up and GO! Fingers crossed it won't be too much longer!!

I've never not been able to find a park. Some older ones have shorter sites however that may turn you down, as so some national and state parks. You just have to tell them ahead of time that you're 65'. I also ask for a pull-thru if available. I use a free app on my phone RVParky. Shows all campgrounds, etc. that allow overnight parking.

I use a variety of apps and Google Earth/Maps to select my parks. As far as calling ahead, depends on the time of year and the area. Some parts of the country all RV spaces are gone a year in advance, especially for holidays and other high demands.

The app I use most is RV Parks and Campgrounds, it is also available for iPhones. Another one that gets good reviews is Allstays, but the apps appear to only be for iOS. Another one I have been messing with is RV Trip Wizard, this one costs $39 a year, but may be worth the cost.

This is my 3rd year fulltime, and finding nice sites in places I wanna visit is one of the aspects of it that I dislike.

If you pull a smaller rig, or aren’t too picky about where you stay... then yes, you can almost always find a place anywhere. But with our big 5ers, if you want to stay in decent places that aren’t mud-holes when it rains, or crowded in short and/or tight spaces... or relatively close to the attraction you’re visiting... then you’ve gotta do some long range planning & advance site reservations. This is particularly true if you wanna stay near the popular national parks, sporting events, and seasonal water areas (lakes, rivers, or beaches). Oh, and for summer holiday travel... add 3 more months lead time.

As a rule, I’ve found I have to make my reservations no less than 6 months ahead of time. This kinda kills the carefree wandering nomad aspect of my travels, but is necessary unless I wanna stay far away from anything remotely appealing.

And of course, you have to reserve all of these places “site unseen”. Using the various tools & apps mentioned help (as does Google Earth) insofar as getting reviews & advice... but, unless you’ve been there before, you won’t really know what you’ve got until you arrive.

Sometimes, despite all the best research & planning you can do before making your reservation... you still wind up in a less-than-desirable site, and there’s really not a whole lot you can do about it. This has happen to me a few times, with the most recent near Yellowstone last year.

Reserved a site 8 months in advance for 2 weeks during the Labor Day holiday time period, and it wasn’t cheap. Arrived, checked in, got escorted to the site. 2 things were immediately clear: 1) this wasn’t a satellite friendly site as I had requested, but hey... it’s Yellowstone, so who cares, right? And 2) although these sites are terraced on a mountainside, they aren’t really level. And by that I mean... I’m gonna need cribbing under my left side jacks to make this work. There were also a few other issues I had that I won’t mention... none of which are real deal-breakers... but added all together, things that I shouldnt’ve had to deal with for $78/night.

Now at this point... sure, I can go back to the front desk, request my money back (minus my deposit), and leave... but where am I gonna go? Again, it’s Labor Day time period, and it’s Yellowstone. Every campground & RV Park for 150 miles around is booked up solid. There’s no where else to go, unless I wanna completely leave the area.

Then there are other places you go... get all set up... and don’t find out a bad situation exists until you’ve been there a night or 2. Maybe it’s a wind direction change that brings the odors of a stock yard a mile away to your door... or a rainstorm turns your campground into an ankle-deep muddy mess. Regardless, you’re stuck there for the duration of your reservation because there are no refunds. If this were the Marriott, and you checked out on day 3 of a planned 10-day stay... you’d only be charged for the 2 nights you stayed. But not so in the RV world. You pay for the entire stay up front, and that’s it. You can leave, but you ain’t getting your money back.

So... do your research as best you can and reserve early.

Maybe there will be an app someday that will list all the nuances with the sites at the campgrounds. you always wonder what issues you will run into when you book. Will the site be level? Muddy? easy to back into? will I fit? etc.

We use the All Stays app and rely on the User Reviews and the campground website. I look for the best and worst reviews and gauge which is written by someone closer to our RVing style. We dont really care about the laundry and showers, but we want some space and some sort of view. Others are just happy to get the cheapest site they can.

Like others have said, the "free and easy" RV lifestyle pretty much drops off Memorial Day through Labor Day with the summer school break. But the rest of the year can be wonderfully easy going. Good luck!

We spotted a couple of Voltage rigs last week while staying at Pirateland RV resort in Myrtle Beach SC. Love that place, its a nice, easy get away for us only 1 1/2 hours from home. We love our big rig, and will be taking our first long haul in a few months!! Hoping to become full timers next year!!
