Voltage Slide Toppers

We are getting ready for an impending cross country move to Southern Maryland. Since we are planning on staying full time in the RV when we get there, we are wanting to install Slide Toppers, which will keep the slides somewhat more protected from the elements....rain, which we have not dealt with a whole lot here in CA.

I am looking at CareFree and Dometic (A&E Systems). I can get both brands from Amazon, but I have read a lot of reviews stating how bad CareFree was in the past. What do you guys have?

The Dometic Slide Topper Deluxe looks nice and looks like they have a vinyl covering when the slides are in...

Any info, comments, suggestions, or feelings would be great. I am also planning on installing these myself.

Thanks,
Cale

I only had mine put on a month ago (Carefree). They match my Voltage awnings perfectly and look great. No complaints, but again only had them a month...

We had the Carefree toppers on our last hauler and they worked great. Only downfall to them is they flap in heavy wind. There were a few nights I would put the slides in so that we could sleep.

Are those the CareFree Slideout Kover III ? What type of material did you decide to go with, Vinyl, Acrylic, etc...?

Thanks,
Cale

I have the Care free toppers on mine. Have had no problems in the past year and a half I've had the camper. I live in northern Maryland so I can tell you this will be a change for you.

Thanks, we are ready for a change. My wife is from the greater Annapolis area and I spent four long (not fun) years on the Severn...

I am leaning towards the CareFree now. Do you have the plane Jane version? My kitchen slide is under my awning, the plane version looks like it has a low profile and will fit the bill nicely.

Cale,
I believe I will finally get mine back from CW this weekend. If I do I will be able to tell you then which model I have on my 3950 above the kitchen. I do not believe they are the kind with the metal guard around them. All my paperwork is in the camper.
Yes there is enough room above the kitchen to have the awning and topper without them beating/rubbibg against each other.

I don't see a reason to have slide toppers. What do they do?

Help keep things cooler and cleaner. I have had slide toppers in the past, I used them on a fiver that went to AZ to keep the heat off the top of the slides. I used them on the east coast to help keep the leaves and other small debris off.

Get out of the desert and you'll see.. Leave, branches, sticks etc. Plus they add some shade and some rain protection.

Cale, I have an awning over the one slide as well and still put the Carefree topper on. It fits nicely.

I have never had them before, but with our impending move to an area that has a lot of rain and a chance of snow, I would like to protect the roof of the slides. Plus, even though I keep the slides clean and sealed, I am still a little gun shy with a combination of Schwintek Slide Installation and Rain. Just another layer of protection in my eyes.

I am on the fence about getting White or Black toppers. The white will be obviously cooler, but the black is more aesthetically pleasing....

OK guys, some good answers. Here in the desert they would be helpful in reducing the heat. I was just thinking that if a bunch on nasty tree pitch fell on them they would harder to clean than the tops of the slides. Then again with my solar I don't camp under trees much. Just cactus!

I'm sure they have their benefits. They seem to come standard on all of the higher end motor homes.

I see your being on the fence about color. When I got my window shades I went with black as they show quite a bit. I'm not sure how much the slide toppers would be seen though. My thoughts are that white may be what I would chose. Although, with the gap between the topper and the slide it might not make that big of a difference. The sun and heat in these things is relentless.

Good luck with your decession.

Thom - interested in a pic or two as my dealer and Dutchmen told me there was not enough clearance on the kitchen slide to allow enough slope for runoff under the main awning. Also the model used there would be helpful.
