I have blown my second tire. It was a Maxxis. My first was OEM Akuret. Both took out part of the fenders. Now I am thinking of upgrading to a 17.5 inch J rated tire. It might be a little overkill but my 16 inch E rated was not doing the job. the J rated cost a little more but I feel will give me a lot of extra load weight on the tires.
My question is has anyone upgraded to a J rated 17.5 inch tire and if so how do they like it??
I carry a lot of weight and usually maxed out on the weight now if not a little over. Any thoughts about going to a 17.5 inch tire J rated??
BTW J is rated just over 6000 pounds per tire far exceeding the axle rating.
Sounds like overkill to me. All you need is to put some Michelin XPS Rib LT's on the rims you already have and save your money for fuel. It's not about the weight carrying capability of the tire. It's all about the construction quality of the tire and the Ribs are tires you can depend on.
My trailer's GVWR is 19,000 pounds. I've had it weighed and there's 3,500 pounds on the pin leaving 15,500 on the tires. Even at max weight on my 6 tires there is less than 2,600 pounds per tire. Well within the limits of an E-rated LT tire.

I ran my truck and trailer over the scales and found out that the trailer tires are at their max for weight and it wasn't even fully loaded, and with no water in any of the tanks. I plan on going to a higher load range when I get the money. The 17.5 would be great but my budget says no.
Thanks for the replies but I am afraid the LT tires albeit may be higher quality will not carry the load in fact they are rated for a lesser load.. Yes I am overkill but was hoping to hear from someone that may have indeed already done what I am pondering doing. Maybe someone will pipe in with their experience.
I upgraded, thought seriousy about switching to 17.5" wheels, but decided not to. I went with new 16" tires on my factory wheels. I can't answer your specific question, but can offer incite into the 16" tire options to show you there are other routes than 17.5". Here is the link to my thread from last year.

What trailer do you have? I installed Hankook TH10 215/75 R17.5 100 16PR TL BSW TIRES. At 4060 lbs per tire on 7,000 lbs axles that's all I need.

desertRat I have a 3200 Voltage. i keep it loaded to max and beyond.. the tire blowouts are killing me.. i need overkill with to me is comfort knowing the tires will not blow..
I went with the Sailun S637 235/85R16 G rated tire, because with 6 of them they are capable of carrying almost 24k. Far more than the axels are rated for. They do max the factory Rim out but I keep mine at 105psi. They pull smoother and you do not get the sag like the old E rated tires.
If I only had two axels, I seriously would have considered going to the 17.5 wheels and Good year tires. The cost does not hit you as bad as 6 wheels and tires but you are spreading all the weight across four tires. Feel that the double axels are riding closer to maxed out rather than the triples.

I have the 17.5 Continentals and could not be happier. Pricey? Yes. Overkill? Not to me....
I followed the tire thread on this site and took the advice of many....Continental 17.5s on my Voltage. Absolutely love them! As one of the other members posted on the other thread....when you have a blow out at 70 mph plus, you'll probably have more cost in body damage than the cost of the wheels and tires. I don't even have to think about the tires now....I just enjoy the trip
