FYI, never run your RV tires more than 5 years, your just running on borrowed time!
Thanks

My father in law has suffered a blowout in each of the last two years with his 17.5 Goodyears - 3 years old. We all roll the dice a little...

Not sure with the configuration I had, but probably around 12-13k lbs on the axles.

I run Michelin truck tires (XPS Ribs) on my Voltage and blowouts are something I don't concern myself with. We just got back from Florida and, again, had an event-free trip. In four years of running LT tires I have not had a single tire incident.

Oh, and it has nothing to do with running higher rated tires/rims; it's all about the quality of the tire and LT tires have that quality.
I wish I could go with LTs, but alas, the two axle set up won't allow it. I bought these Carlisles last minute, but was planning on the Gs that are not kept in stock for the future. I get them mounted tomorrow, then drive down for the repair quote. Fun times.

I have 3 axles and the GVWR of my V-3600 is 19,000. I had it weighed and with a normal load without my Harley in the back it weighs 16,500 total and 3,500 of that is on the pin. With my Harley in the back the pin will be slightly less but I haven't yet weighed it in that configuration.

Anyway, doing the math, lets say I max out the trailer with toys and keep the 3,500 pin weight as the toys would be in the back. 19,000-3,500 leaves 15,500 on the 3 axles. 15,000/6 tires is 2,583 pounds per tire, which is well under the 3,042 rating of the XPS Rib tire. Keep in mind that the Ribs seem to only work on the triple axle trailers.

Doing the math for a double axle trailer, like a V-3200 requires a much higher rated tire and the Ribs won't work. Assume a 16,500 GVWR for the V-3200 and 3,000 on the pin, which leaves 13,500 on the two axles. Dividing that weight among 4 tires shows 3,375 pounds per tire, well above the tire's load rating. In this case I'd be looking at moving up to a higher rated tire but definitely not one made in China.
Thanks for the info ezdryheat. I believe i will got with g rated on the next change.

I have to admit i am very surprised with all theses blow out stories, you where lucky that you could make it safely on the side of the road. Also glad you didnt entirely scrap the side of your rig.

Looking at your thread wear it looks like it was used evenly and had more then enough thread. Was it a very hot day? I wonder if tpms could have warned you this was coming?

It was maybe 70 outside.

I was at the dealership today for the insurance quote and checked out some new rigs. The Voltage 4150 has 6 Westlake 235/85/16s G rated tires that have a higher load capacity than the G614s. This particular coach had a 2016 build date. The lower models still had the 235/80/16s on them though.

BTW, I'm very happy with the G114s that I put on today, they pull better it feels like.

I had the Chinese tires and the previous owner had already had 2 blowouts. I replaced with the Maxxis M8008 tires and so far so good. If I had known at the time I might have spent the extra for the G614's but from what I have seen the Maxxis tires seem to get good reviews.

Did our first trip since moving to Goodyear Marathons. A little over 2000 miles and they look like new.

Set them at 80 psi before leaving, return check shows they are all still at 80 psi.

Whew!!!!

It's not just the "brand" what was the rating? The "G" rated tire will carry the load of the big triple axle toy haulers. Also, there is a big advantage in running truck tires "LT" instead of the typical "trailer" rated tires. In California they won't mount the LT's on your trailer because they government here protects us from abuse??? So you will need to take your rims off and run them to the dealer in your truck and make up a story about using them on your farm to get the dealer to install them! The bottom line is there are a lot of options above and beyond the typical Chinese trailer tires that come stock on these rigs. Find something that fits your situation and don't run them longer than 5 years!!

They were / are "G". First one blew out and created allot of carnage. Second one held air but tread separated completely. Still holding air when he took it to the Goodyear dealer to show them.

One thing I learned this Winter, when taking all the wheels off to take them in and have the new tires mounted...

Hooked the Voltage to the truck, raised all the hydraulic jacks, placed a section of landscaping tie under each jack, ran the front two jacks down enough to disconnect the truck.

Then used manual control to run the jacks down and raise the tires about 4" off the concrete pad. Took the wheels off and put 'em in the truck.

Voltage sat like that for more than a week, never moved. Sure made it easy to dismount and then remount the wheels!!

Just a thought!

New 17.5" wheels and Continental tires arrived yesterday! Does anyone know what the torque specs are for the lug nuts on these trailers? Thanks!

Superduty - you are gonna love that setup - I sure do! Watch when backing in how there is NO side flex on these tires....

FYI from the owner's manual:

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE JACKS STANDS
OR STABILIZER JACKS TO JACK UP THE
TRAILER OR SUPPORT THE FULL WEIGHT OF
THE TRAILER.

That's the CYA paragraph, saying if you break it we won't fix it. It's the paragraph the the service guys don't read. I've seen more than one trailer on dealer lots that have all four wheels off the ground and nothing holding them up but the jacks.

If proper sized hydraulics were used it wouldn't be a problem. But with the mimimalist approach used in building RVs the hydralics are probably right at their upper limit for weight.

Wonder if they put the same warning in the Class A owners manual.

All mine says is to keep the rear wheels on the ground, cause that is where the parking brakes are... FWIW my Concord has the Big Foot fully automatic system on it, if I am reading my parts manual correctly I have an 8,000# jack on each corner. That means I could lift it off the ground no problem, coach grosses around 14,500. Real world weight is 13,500+, haven't been to the scales yet.

Does a voltage come with a tire jack? I have an bet with a friend that they don't - since I can't find one on mine. He has one on his - different brand/manufacture.

Mine did not. I wouldn't trust it if it did. I bought a 12 ton bottle jack to carry along.
