Tank Heaters

We have 3 tank heater switches on our 2016 Voltage Triton 2951. Curious how these tank heaters work.

I've turned on all 3 switches and saw no change or increase in battery current (using a clamp-on ammeter).

Does it work in tandem with the onboard propane heater somehow?

Thanks!

Thanks. Since I'm not showing current when I turn on the tank heaters, curious if the heater elements have a thermostat that only allow them to turn on at cold temps.

Yes... typically they will come one around 35°f.

It might sound obvious but are you on shore power? If you are, the power converter will supply the heater and you will not see any current draw from the battery.

I recommend you dont run them if the tanks are empty, i have heard there is a risk of melting the tanks. I would think there is protection against overheating but i would not trust it to be on safe side.

Here is some information from UltraHeat RV tank heaters. These are the best on the market... Unfortunately Dutchmen and many of the other RV manufacturers use the cheap Chinese knock-offs. The documentation that came with mine says you can turn them on even if the tanks are empty. You most definitely will want to be plugged in or have the generator powered up if you are using them regularly. They pull upwards of 20 amps (or even more) of DC current when they are all switched on. I prefer them in conjunction with a heated belly pan that allows you to use the furnace to push warm air down into the tank area. I have had trailers with this system in the past and as long as you had warm air moving you were in good shape.
