I did the same thing with screws. But I went with original size. Not sure I understand the corner plate your describing ? Pics when you can, thanks.

Went out this morning and pulled the other side off, then cleaned and caulked the whole bottom. Here are the pics of the corner and the back, the second picture where there is a space with no caulk is a good candidate for water intrusion. That hole goes into the slide, also look at the third pic, that is the back...
