Roof vent cap blown off... Took in water

We had some strong wind and rain and saw water coming in through the ceiling register above the oven. Going atop, we found one of the front 2" vent pipe caps had blown off. As there was about an inch of rain that day, it had to have gone down the vent and come out onto the ceiling. We capped it (temp) and got everything dry so we are ok for now, but anyone know what those vents are for? I ran everything, and felt nothing coming out, so maybe it is just ventilation?

They are plumbing vents, holding tanks... should be, unless I'm missing something.

Yep... black & grey tank vents. Your range vent should be on the side of the rig.

While those caps are needed to keep out varmints, as far as the leak, I'd be looking at an air conditioner seal maybe leaking. I would check and make sure everything is sealed good up there. Just a thought.

Thanks all! - good to know they are just tank vents. Everything else up there looked still new and well sealed, and nothing else looked suspicious.

If it was just the cap had blown off, I doubt very much that that is the source of you leak.

X2 what Camper2b said about varmit covers.

There should be a collar around the vent pipe and it needs to be sealed with self-leveling sealer both top and bottom.

I would be looking at all of the seals on the roof, water follows the line of least resistance to the lowest level. It is very possible that the source could be several feet away from where it shows on the inside.

I'll say it again, a moisture meter is an RVers best friend. Mine only comes out of the trailer once a year to check the moisture content of my firewood. Otherwise it is in my trailer tool kit.

Could they be "attic" vents? I have seen those on a few RV's, they look similar to the plumbing covers, but only go just through the roof deck.

Makes more sense they would be attic vents given the fact water intrusion into the inside. Also, the mention of the 'front' cap which would indicate an attic vent.
My plumbing stacks are in the center and together and the attic vents are more on the side and on the ends.
Photos would tell the tale for sure.

I saw 3 of them.. 2 towards the front and left, and next to each other (one was the missing one) and the 3rd towards the back and right. If there is one for each tank, that would match countwise. But it seems like the trajectory from the pipe vent to the tank would have to bend somewhere, and a straight shot seems like would take it thru the living area. Maybe one of those bends are in the roof and leaked on its way over to go down to the tank? I am still looking for a moisture meter to make sure nothing else is going on too..

My 2012 3800 has two PVC vents in the center of the rig while the attic vents are sheet metal and outboard and only two of them.

It's any one's guess how the venting scheme works.

Here's a schematic of the sewer system. It shows the vents, but not necessarily how they're plumbed through the walls:

Amazing...ATCguy - Where did you get that? Yes it would be cool to also know where they routed the pipes up the walls and out the roof. So tomorrow i will see if it is still dry, now with that pipe capped and having gotten some more rain. I bought the General Tools & Instruments MMD7NP Moisture Meter, Pinless, Digital LCD with Tricolor Bar Graph - - Amazon.com
Moisture meter tonight so should have that by mon or tue next week. Hope it works for $49.. the FLIR is the one i wanted (after seeing a guy use one to spot a water leak in our house last year) but those are around $600.

VCToyhauler,

Sorry I missed your post looking for info on moisture meters.

That moisture meter should do what you need it to, mine is an old analog pin type, also General Instruments. It's so old that it was "Made in USA."

I'll be very interested to hear how it works, as I haven't had any experience with the pinless meter. I wouldn't mind updating to a pinless meter so I don't have to be concered about where I take a reading.

I have no idea where he got it, but it was sent to me by "eightydo" awhile back.

The file is only for the 3200 model, but there are separate pages for fresh water plumbing, heater system, electrical, and propane systems.

I'm posting from my iPad right now, but I'll post all of them in a separate thread later when I get back to my computer.

Yep - mine look just like that, 2" black pipes, 2 in front, one in back. Only difference is my front ones are more to the left side than center. So they are tank vents, and maybe they do have a straight shot down without bends, probably to the left of the fridge and behind the pantry. As soon as my moisture meter gets here i will check the ceiling again, as it is starting to sound like the obvious missing cap may not have been the issue..

Slim,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the attic vents larger than a 2" PVC pipe.

It seems that this "Mushroom Vent" is unique to Thor products from what I have seen online.

Keystone Mushroom Roof - Attic Vent from RV Parts & Accessories

If the RV tank vents are installed in the same way that the stack in a house is installed, it is not glued, to allow for expansion and contraction.

I just recalled that when I heard the stack in the bathroom going crazy this morning. So that could account for it causing a leak during a downpour.

This topic is making me wonder if the attic vent is something that their "design salespeople" have decided to add without any thought as to sizing and placement. Just slapping an attic vent on the roof without providing both intake and exhaust of the minimum calculated size would be of little use.

Thanks for the pic hddecker... I was not sure what the attic vent would look like. That looks a bit larger (5 in) than these. I got the new camco cap from amazon today and tomorrow will go back up and put it on (if it fits!) and take pics.
