New tires for Voltage 4145

I’m sure there are articles all over but wanting to replace my OEM tires on my 4145 has anyone done this yet and what did you get. Went to a tire dealer today and they wanted to sell me a set of Hercules 235R/90R/16 not sure the up from 85R to 90R would make they are a slight bite taller but not much just haven’t heard of them just they are American made. Any help would be appreciated.

I just put sailun g rated on have a few friends that run them. Mechanic recommends them to his commercial accounts. im very happy with them. (You have a lot of opinions coming now) All our best

I'm running Hercules tires 235/85/R16 G. Had them just over a year now and they are definitely a good heavy tire, wearing well, no sign of uneven wear running 90 psi. Sidewall says they were made in Thailand. Bought them from my local Firestone tire store who also mounted and balanced them. He has sold a lot of them and commented the Hercules are truer around than a lot of trailer tires which makes them balance out nice. I would say the 90/R16 would work fine for you. I had replaced the original Westlake with a set of China made Gladiators G's when the camper was new in 14 and ran them a lot of miles but I like the Hercules because of balancing advantage.

While Hercules are an American label (actually looks like a brand for Cooper) I believe they are made in China.

The only American made ST (trailer) tire I have found is the Goodyear Endurance. Goodyear has another trailer called Marathon but that is made in China.

Obviously, Goodyear is an American company but that doesn’t mean they (or other American companies) actually manufacture all their tires here. They love to tell you they are an American based company but they leave out the fact they don’t manufacture everything here.

As to your question about the tires, I don’t have any experience with them so can’t help you there.

I have been running Hercules for 2 years with no issues. I have had issues with both Westlake and Goodyear Marathon. Below is a pic of the blown out Goodyear. Sounded like a bomb went off when it blew. The Hercules look like semi trailer tires and are G rated.

I've had nothing but Michelin truck tires on my 5th wheels. Currently I'm on my 2nd set of Michelin XPS Ribs on my 6 year old Voltage. The XPS is a commercial truck tire. Not a single tire issue with any of my Michelins.

The Marathon’s are Chinese. It is a shame Goodyear puts their name on them.

Truck tires are a great call as long as they have the load carrying capacity you need. In my experience with a two axle TH the capacity of the XBS Ribs was not sufficient. If I recall they were a few hundred pounds light per tire. The truck tires are DOT legal so held to a higher standard than the ST trailer standard. If you have a three axle trailer you will likely be okay.

I have a Voltage 3990, just replaced the Westlakes that were on there, they were actually 10 Ply, but a lot of weather checking, no tire wear. Walmart carries Sailun 14 Ply tires, but because of Civid pandemic, they wont install, I had them delivered to my home, and had a local garage mount, and balance them. the 10 ply tires are a different height than the 14 ply, but not enough to worry about clearance. another consideration is going from 10 ply to 14, you must change the valve stems to metal for the higher tire pressure ( 110 ). You can also go with an upgrade 17.5, 16 ply tires, but the cost for new rims, is very high, I did that on my Redwood, but they are real nice tires (goodyears ). I will try to get nitrigen into them pretty soon, have an appointment at Moryde for IS suspension and disk brakes, hopefuuly they can do the nitrogen at this time.

I’ve had gladiators and they were OK, they still failed. I looked at the Michelin XP’s rib, but they are only10 or 12 ply. In the end I choose the Goodyear G614’s, 14 ply, so far I don’t think there is a better tire out there for our trailers short of changing wheels and tires and goin bigger rim diameter. Price is the only issue with these, but if you blow out one of the cheaper tires it will probably do enough damage to make up for the price. They also have a higher speed rating. These may not be a good choice if your rims can’t handle the extra air pressure.

Goodyear Endurance. By far the best trailer tire out there. Do some research as they have higher speed ratings and higher load capacity than any others I could find.

They are also not cheap but well worth it in my book. Also made in the USA which none of the others can say.

If you have a heavy two axle trailer these are ideal. Might be overkill for you three axle guys who don’t require the load capacity of us two axle guys but I don’t like to mess around with tires.

Just make sure to check the specs as they have many sizes and some that fit your rims may not have the same capacity as others so double check before you buy. I had to go to an 85 instead of an 80 height but same size as the OEM spare and even Dutchmen confirms they would work. The best part is they only require 80 lbs of pressure and not 100+ so rubber valve stems are safe.

They seem to hold air well and wear well too. Lots of higher speed and fully loaded long highway stretches of 800 or so miles in one day and zero issues.

As you can tell I am a big fan.

I did the research, I run endurance tires on my enclosed trailer. I won’t run a 10 ply on my toyhauler, the 614’s are called a light truck tire, but are rated for trailers as well. They have a higher load carrying capacity than the endurance. I don’t care whether I have a steel or rubber valve stem. Price is the only issue, they are significantly more expensive than an endurance, but for piece of mind worth it.

In the end do what makes you feel good.

COOPER has. New tire. It’s called their Roadmaster line possibly you may want to look at them. I have previously used Goodyear Endurance tires and I would swear by them. I had a puncture in one of them and ran flat for a mile or so. The tire was patched and survived.

Everyone that has been here for a while probably knows my issues with “China Bombs” and one thing I would importantly negotiate when purchasing a new RV is to get those tires off before I drove it off the lot!

Erhardd makes some good points. I agree valve stems are not a big deal but most tire shops don’t stock the metal valve stems so if you opt for a tire that requires them which is basically any tire that requires over 80 psi then make sure you have those in hand when having the tires mounted. You can’t replace the valve stems later without removing and un-mounting the tires first, which is obviously a major pain if not done initially.

In my case the Endurance tires had sufficient capacity that actually exceeds axle capacity so I didn’t feel it was necessary to go any higher. They are around $200 a piece if I recall.

I have been running Hercules G rated tires on 17.5 inch wheels for 6 years with no issues. Tires still look almost new.
