New tire suggestions?

I'm replacing all six ST235 80 X 16 tires on my 2015 Voltage 3970. I'm told that I should get 14 ply? I'm also told Hankook tires are pretty good. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what and, also, where they can be bought? THanks!

That is exactly what I just put in too. Love them. Extreme heavy duty without putting on larger wheels.

Jerry,

Yes, go to a 14 ply and go to a 235-85-16, as long as they will fit in the wheel wells. The 85 aspect ratio tires are about an inch taller, so you'll loose 1/2" clearance in the wheel well.

When your shopping for tires you want to keep in mind they only have to follow where the TV takes them. You don't need a fancy tread or a sticky rubber compound. You do want a tire with the stiffest sidewall and hardest rubber compound you can find.

I'm working on my second set of upsized tires, my first set gave me 25000 miles.

I installed the Sailun S637 tires on stock rims and love them. The stiffer sidewall made the sway less and due to the rating of the tire, I don't worry near as much about a blowout. I would recommend these tires especially with a 2 axle trailer.

OK...so all the discussion regarding immediately replacing "factory" tires has me concerned. My 2015 Voltage 3805 is now a year old and has less than 1,000 travel miles. Planning a trip to the Black Hills in less than a month and 6 new tires (7 with spare) were not on my vacation budget plan. Are the factory tires that bad and only good to get the rig home from the dealership?

I just replaced my tires after 1.5 yrs. My rig is a lot smaller than yours. However, I learned that trailer tires are notoriously out of balance, and are not balanced at the factory. I help out in a shop, and balanced my new ones, and they needed A LOT of weights.
I have formed the opinion that unbalanced tires contribute (and might be the primary cause) to blowouts, bearing failures, etc. Personally, I'd keep yours, but get them balanced before you go. Have a great time in the Black Hills!

Avoid all future tire issues by switching to an LT truck tire. I have Michelin XPS Ribs on mine and they've been performing flawlessly for the past two years while going coast-to-coast. Switching to a heavier duty tire is unnecessary, you just gotta switch to a better quality tire and get away from the stuff made in China.

On a triple-axle trailer there isn't much weight on the individual tires so you don't need more weight carrying capacity, again, just need a better made tire. When I travel, my trailer weighs around 18,000 with 3,500 of that on the pin (CAT scale). With 14,500 pounds distributed among 6 tires that's only 2416 pounds per tire. That's not a lot of weight. The LT truck tires are good up to 3402 pounds so pretty much any LT truck tire will do. Again, a beefier tire is not necessary, just need a better made tire.

Jerry, Most Tires are made in china, My old Westlakes, like Bill I got over 15K, I watched the Tire Pressure, speed, not over 60.....I picked the Sailun because they are sold at Big O Tire, which the stores are every where....Bil picked Carlisle which are at Discount Tire...Both stores are everywhere...The new tires are great, they run cooler then the westlakes, they are on the same rims, the side walls are very hard, and the tires weight a ton....There are a few good tires out there, Cost is another thing, All 6 of mind, with Balance, around 1500, Most of the guys here are running 235/85/R16's, the rest have gone to 17's Rim and tire, check out the Gladiator, Carlisle, Sailun, and Goodyear G614....Good Luck, when you take off the westlakes, Feel the weight between the new and the old....

Thank you to everyone on this forum for all of the discussion and suggestions on tires for our Toy Haulers.

I replaced my Westlakes on my Voltage 3805 with Sailun S637 Regional Trailer (235/85-16) based on my reviews and suggestions from members on this forum. I could not be happier. These are commercial grade trailer tires, G-Rated (4000+ lbs) and half the price of LT tires with a 75 mph rating ($120 - See Link Below).

I already have over 6,000 miles on these new tires and I am very impressed and would highly recommend to anyone looking to replace their tires.

Salun 637

I too installed the Salun 637 on my 3200 and they work perfectly. No side flex and so far no wear. My rims had only the 3960 lb rating on them ... no psi rating. After a month of research I found the 3960 rating is actually equal to the 110 psi rating. The sailing tires fit and I run them at 105psi.

There are lots of good ideas listed but after losing 2 fenders and part of the body from blowouts on my camper. One was OEM tires and the other was maxxis tires. I went to a 17.5 inch rim with "J" rated tires. These tires look like semi tires in the tread. Very heavy duty and now I have no problem with weight or tires. Something to look at if your having tire problems on the Voltage or other heavy 5th wheeler. One set cost less than one blowout not to mention the time and troubles. I purchased mine on line already mounted and balanced..
