Montana high country, camping & fishing

Hey all,

The family is going to escape the heat of Arizona this summer and my wife wants to go to Montana. I have only driven through and am not familiar with camping and fishing in the state, but I have heard it is abundant.

Does anyone here have a favorite spot they like to go to. I am open to both dry camping and RV parks. Streams, Lakes and Rivers close to the camp area would be ideal.

We want to get high to get out of the heat. No pun intended.

Thanks
Arlan in Arizona

Hi Arlan,
I just discovered a neat trip planning tool at the Good Sam website that helped me plan my trip to Montana this summer. I bet you will find a lot of the information you are looking for using their tool. You will need a Good Sam login account to use it.

I have Good Sam. I haven't used it for much except campground discounts. I will check it out.

Thanks.

You can't go wrong with Glacier National Park and Yellowstone. I would suggest staying on the west side of the state as eastern Montana is pretty flat. We personally enjoy north of Libby on Lake Koocanusa (McGillivray Campground on Lake Koocanusa, Libby, Montana area). Pretty quiet and no crowds. I would also suggest visiting the Lewis and Clark Caverns just east of Whitehall (Montana State Parks :: Lewis & Clark Caverns). Have fun whatever you decide - it's a beautiful state!

Montana is humongous, do you have a general location to provide more suggestions?
As pointed out, mountains in the west and plains in the east.

Red Lodge MT., Beartooth Pass, and Chief Joseph Highway. Can't beat them.

Great, three locations with names that appeal. I will do some research. We have 3 to 4 months to be gone and I am guessing by the end of that time I should have a lot more knowledge of the State of Montana.

I just showed this post to my wife and she said she would never take a big vehicle in those areas. Girls, sheesh. I am looking at it on the topo map right now and am seeing what she is talking about.

Listen to your wife! I do the pass on a bike. Wouldn't want to take your 3905 (although better yours than mine, LOL). Take the long way. Do Cody and see the rodeo, museum, and have a beverage at the Irma.
